While pocket watches are generally considered standard fare in Victorian time pieces, wrist watches were in use as evidenced by this photograph from my web site that depicts a Sergeant of the 1st Battalion, The King's Own Scottish Borderers taken in Rangoon, Burma, c.1888. A close up of the woman's wrist clearly shows he wearing a wrist watch. Actually the watch may be a pocket variety that is being worn on the wrist via a leather strap and open face cover. Wrist watches do indeed have a more pronounced period look and feel there are other options when working up a new costume or outfit. The more options the better!

It is generally considered that the military were indeed among the first to convert pocket watches to wrist watches. It was discovered that it was far more handy, and presented less of a target, when one could quickly look at ones wrist, instaed of having to withdraw a pocket watch and check it.

If one is going to be in trouble or under fire, a wrist watch is much preferred. For formal occasions, the pocket watch is more appropriate.

Personally I prefer pocket watches because I can't stand the feel of large chunky things on my wrists all the time. Can't say why it gets to me, but it drives me nuts. A watch in the pocket avoids this issue.

Same here... I find my wrist size changes throughout the day to the degree where a watch becomes too tight or too loose, also when doing heavy manual work the same thing happens and either I break the catch or it digs into my arm.  I cant seem to wear plastic or fabric strapped watches as the straps only last 6 mnts to a year (they seem to perish very quickly).  Must say though that I hadnt thought of the pocket watch route till fairly recently (thanks to the forum)...  Grin

I, much as the two gentlemen who posted just before me, prefer pocket watches as I find wearing most anything around my wrist rather uncomfortable.

I love pocket watches, but I tend to wear a wrist watch most of the time.

I do however wear mine with the face of the watch face down, and on my right hand.

We beg to offer a few thoughts for your consideration.

At one time, wrist-watches were considered as bracelets were, somewhat effeminate.

For safety reasons, workers at machinery were permitted neither wrist-watches nor finger-rings.

Wrist-watches were adopted by aeroplane pilots of the Great War, who could not distract themselves to fidget about, extracting a watch from a pocket. These gallants took to wearing the face of the watch on the inside of the wrist, permitting quicker inspection of the dial and hands.

Personally, I as well, prefer a pocket watch. (Just got another one)
