It is generally considered that the military were indeed among the first to convert pocket watches to wrist watches. It was discovered that it was far more handy, and presented less of a target, when one could quickly look at ones wrist, instaed of having to withdraw a pocket watch and check it.

If one is going to be in trouble or under fire, a wrist watch is much preferred. For formal occasions, the pocket watch is more appropriate.

Personally I prefer pocket watches because I can't stand the feel of large chunky things on my wrists all the time. Can't say why it gets to me, but it drives me nuts. A watch in the pocket avoids this issue.

Same here... I find my wrist size changes throughout the day to the degree where a watch becomes too tight or too loose, also when doing heavy manual work the same thing happens and either I break the catch or it digs into my arm. I cant seem to wear plastic or fabric strapped watches as the straps only last 6 mnts to a year (they seem to perish very quickly). Must say though that I hadnt thought of the pocket watch route till fairly recently (thanks to the forum)...

I, much as the two gentlemen who posted just before me, prefer pocket watches as I find wearing most anything around my wrist rather uncomfortable.

I love pocket watches, but I tend to wear a wrist watch most of the time.
I do however wear mine with the face of the watch face down, and on my right hand.

We beg to offer a few thoughts for your consideration.
At one time, wrist-watches were considered as bracelets were, somewhat effeminate.
For safety reasons, workers at machinery were permitted neither wrist-watches nor finger-rings.
Wrist-watches were adopted by aeroplane pilots of the Great War, who could not distract themselves to fidget about, extracting a watch from a pocket. These gallants took to wearing the face of the watch on the inside of the wrist, permitting quicker inspection of the dial and hands.
