Even if you are unable to attend, you may appreciate the description of this class coming up at the International Swordfighting and Martial Arts Convention (ISMAC) in 2009.

"Based on the little-known 1838 book 'How to Protect Life and Property,' this class presents extracts from Baron Charles de Berenger's system of Defensive Gymnastics including Unarmed Combat and Walking Cane Defense, Extrication from Perilous Situations including Pickpocketry, the Depredations of Garroters and Other Ruffians, What to Do if Accosted by a Highwayman, &c, &c, &c. Requires: sturdy walking cane or 36" dowel; stiff upper lip, top hat and pocket watch encouraged but not mandatory."

I look forward to this greatly, as I attended ISMAC last year and had great fun, particularly in Tony's classes. If you are interested further, check out the main page here: http://artofcombat.org/public/thespis/Convention/aocflyer.htm

A little bird tells me that Edwardian bicycle self defense may also be offered as an elective class ...

That could be useful too. I get attacked by bicycles all the time.

"Defensive Gymnastics" (the new book, not the ISMAC class) is condensed from "Helps and Hints", excerpting Baron de Berenger's chapters on things like home remedies and field sports to concentrate on his themes of courage, self defense and emergency survival techniques. The 2008 edition also includes over fifty new photographs and additional images to illustrate the methods that the Baron described textually but not graphically in the original edition, plus a new biographical essay on de Berenger himself.

Yes, but are they Edwardian Bicycles?

Oh, all right; I believe that the class is actually called "Self Protection on a Cycle". It may be your only chance to throw a bicycle at a heavily padded stuntman.
