Good day Is anyone planning a United Kingdom Steampunk Convention? I would be interested in helping to organize such an event after July 2009 (I have other science fiction and fantasy convention committments up to that date). There is a small convention called Conrunner II taking place in Sheffield (UK) in January 2010, which is specifically for persons who currently or intend to run science fiction/fantasy/horror conventions of all types, and will include those persons who ran the last United Kingdom based World Science Fiction Convention in Glasgow in 2005, which had 4,000 plus attendees. I am currently Co-Chair of LX 2009, the Eastercon, or British National Science Fiction Convention being held in Bradford between 10-13 April 2009 with Guests of Honour including Mr Tim Powers and Mr Jon Courtenay Grimwood, so steampunk and alternate Victoriania will be represented. See more www.lx2009.com. We already have in excess of 500 members. I know we already have several members whose devotion to steampunk is clear. Time for a Steampunk Convention?

I tried to get my band on the bill for Eastercon - thought they'd enjoy a Steampunk band. Apparently their music roster is full; though can't believe it's exactly full of Steampunk bands...
Shame really. Tim Powers is my literary hero and I really wanted to meet him!

I want to organise a steampunk big event, specifically in London, but the problem is simply one of money. I'm a stone's throw away from some stunning period venues but, alas, not the funds to secure them for a night.

Well, I'm sure if we could get enough people to commit it shouldn't be too big a problem I agree that a UK convention needs to be held. Something to rival Whitby Weekend!

Given the turnout at Whitby there shouldn't be a problem with a lack of attendees
what sort of cost would it be?

if London isnt an option , id recommend Brighton for plenty of hotels and amazing steampunk locations - the sealife Aquarium with its own Nautilus, the pier, and also the fabulous Pavillion..as well as the Lanes

Hiring costs were from £350 an hour to around 4 grand for a venue, from my initial enquiries.

I hadn't had a chance to mention this but after the success of the Whitby steampunk meeting I have arrsnged for the past two years. I have been putting into action a plan for a large residential steampunk convention in the UK. The convention will be held in Brighton and is planned for September 2009. This should be quite the event and the guest artists roster is filling quickly, we have some wonderful names. It would however be nice to get some idea of numbers for attendees. If you are interested in attending, please e-mail me at sadeianlaboratories@hotmail.co.ukAlso I will be hosting a steampounk event in London in December, more news yet to come. If anyone would like to exhibit, sell, perform, etc. at any of these events or indeed at future ones please contact me with your details at the above address.

I would certainly be interested in any Steampunk conventions or meetings that are planned. Its such a wonderful idea.
Has anyone heard that Whitby are having a Victorian weekend at the beginning of December? The receptionist at our hotel told us, but we can't find any information on the internet. That would be a fantastic idea for another Steampunk meet.

That sounds very interesting Captain; what sort of things would be on offer at said convention? Lots of stalls etc, kind of like GW's games day, or something completely different? I live in the South East, so A london event sounds good for me. -Matt

I've been thinking about this, and what I think it would be really nice to have at any sort of steampunk event in the future would be some kind of dance workshop/event/thing.
One of the things I would really love to learn to do is some historical dances, things like waltzes and some of the older folk dances that were contemporary in Regency and Victorian times. The idea of a steampunk ball is definitely appealing. Of course, this probably means that we would need to find someone to actually teach us how to do these things.
On another note, belly dance is pretty steampunk (for both the gentlemen and ladies) and it may be nice to do something with that as well. Unlike historical and ballroom dances, this is something I actually know a thing or two about. Depending on where the convention is held, I may be able to talk my tutor into coming and taking a workshop. Unfortunately, Brighton may well be too far for her as we are in North Wales which is about seven hours drive away.
Kind regards, Allegra xxx

I'm keen to attend anything that may be happening. I am in Devon, but I'm sure I could be persuaded to catch one of those modern "trains"

A splendid idea, you have my full support for such a venture... Mayhap its time to venture outside the Laboratory and I hear these modern "trains" are quite an acheivement. Although how they work efficiently without steam power is beyond my imagination...

Registering interest in a UK Convention here. In particular, saluting the idea of dance classes/workshop so we can all promenade to the "Sir Roger De Coverley" et all in the evening. If the idea of a Victorian Weekend is appealing, you can always visit the Worcester Christmas Fayre http://www.visitworcester.co.uk/WorcesterXmasFayre.htm- last weekend in November & only 40 mins (on a good day) from Birmingham.

a huge meetup is just what we need, but we should avoid the trap of Whitby its too easy and has a long goth history, we need to establish a fresh, maybe industrial/victorian setting, we are also in north wales, greetings it would be great to meet you, we're near abergele regards vampyre Master

Personally I am trying to stay away from the idea of integrating this into standing Victorian events.
I think its important that we try to maintain our own events/image way from the Victorian re-eanactors. All due repect to them but we are trying to do something different.
Neo-Victorianism would, of course, be welcome because of the amount of crossover between the genres. Indeed I would actually put some of the better known American steampunks as being more like neo-Victorians.
Sorry little off subject there for a bit.
Yours,
Sydeian
p.s. some of this may look a bit flame-ish, its not meant to be and apologies for any annoyance caused.

I wasn't actually proposing straight-forward re-enactment. It just seemed a little odd to me that we steampunks will all get down on the dancefloor and shake our thing at Whitby, when it fact it certainly seems far more interesting to me to be able to go out dancing for a night and mix in some raqs sharqi, some quadrilles, or some waltz. We are - as you said - Neo Victorians, and there is not much of any sort of Victorian (or anything historical/ethnic/steampunk) at all about a gothic two step. I was thinking along such lines when I realised that I may know some Middle Eastern dance, but I certainly don't know anything historical that I could incorporate a dance, and that is a bit of a shame because - to me at least - steampunk is all about fusion. The meeting of the old and the new, the Western and the exotic. a huge meetup is just what we need, but we should avoid the trap of Whitby its too easy and has a long goth history, we need to establish a fresh, maybe industrial/victorian setting, we are also in north wales, greetings it would be great to meet you, we're near abergele
Ah! I was honestly beginning to believe that I was the only steampunk in the village, so to speak! I am deeply pleased (and relieved!) to make your acquaintance. I am currently based near Bangor. We should most certainly talk further. Perhaps you would care to PM me? Kind regards, Allegra xxx

Having only attended a couple of small Cons in my life time I would recomend looking slightly outside the box. Being stuck in one location/room/ hall I find very tiring even clostrophobic. Having events outside of the main venue and at differing times during the day I find more appealing. It might be worth contacting the nice chaps who run White Mischief in London for contacts and ideas. If it's in Brighton/London how about a Ghost Walk, companies already exist for this and might be worth contacting. If the venue is good enough or if there is a party involved how about some stilt walkers/ fire acts/ organ grinders(without monkey). Again if there is a party this would be ideal for the dance instruction idea. On another note a certain band resides in Brighton who happen to like tea!

Most of the events thus far planned are indeed outside the main venue. I don't want to say too much but a ghost walk is one of the ideas I am much like yourself Dohickey in that I don't like to be trapped. We have some intriguing surprise jaunts planned at the con. Somee that even surprised me! Allegra, My post was not in reference to the idea of dance classes. I thought dance classes were a spendid idea. I was commenting on the fact I don't want to do another mainstream Victorian event. Learning to dance could equally fit into neo-victorian event. Your idea has been noted and it is indeed a good one Much more to come on this plan everyone keep the ideas coming. Elemental are from Brighton? Now that I didn't know would anyone else apart from myself like to see cup of brown joy performed live?

My mistake, Captain Sadeian. Please accept my apologies.
This seems to be shaping up to be a great project. Perhaps I shall have to plan yet another escape from Wales for next year.
