Jagers are created when normal person drink from the Dyne. Heterodynes have an atypical reaction it temporarily supercharges them as Sparks rather than cause monsterism. Higgs tested Agatha by giving her a glass of Dyne water. It was confirmation that Agatha was indeed a Heterodyne. Why did Higgs do this, how would HE know.
Heterodynes unlike other sparks have a particular scent which Jagers can detect, perhaps a mutation which Jagers due to their teratongenetism can detect? There isn't any indication that other Sparks have this gift? (being a spark is probably a different mutation). No Jager has stated that Higgs smells like a Heterodyne. Does he smoke the pipe to mask it? It would explain a smoking character in an age where smoking in all forms is frowned upon. I don't think any other character smokes in the comic. Several people have mentioned the ever present pipe as a characteristic of Higgs.

@Peter: Didn't (THE UNSTOPPABLE!) Higgs explain that drinking the Dyne was only part of the Jagerization process?
Also I wonder if it's a case of the Dyne bringing out and accentuating innate qualities rather than random manifestations. Sparks become sparkier. Soldiers become tougher, stronger, more prone to want to fight, etc. Can't account for the suddenly evil duck in the Castle's Flashback explaination though... that one strikes me as strange.

Sounds like plain old alcohol to me. In vino veritas and all that - every guy I know who is a bit of an a-hole becomes even more so under the influence. Even if you don't see it on an every day basis, sufficient amounts of tequila, rum, vodka, or whiskey brings out the true nature of a person. It looks like they brought out the head-in-a-jar guy to remind us that death isn't quite so permanent there. So if Pinkie dies, they might bring her back. With her record, it might be safer to keep her in a jar, as well. Cheers! Chas.

Higgs was bang on in not taking Zeethra to the Great Hospital it would appear, and I fear the race will be on between the activation of the Baron's slaver wasp and attack on the Castle and Agatha getting the castle fully functional. I believe the Jagers will change sides, led by Higgs, and that will be decisive.

As much as I enjoy trying to anticipate how the story wil play out, every time I state an opinion on what might happen next, the Foglios throw something unanticipated but perfectly internally consistent at me. It is almost as if they delight in proving they are far more clever and creative than I could ever hope to be.

Hmmm...
Strange machinery. Huge glass tubes with some sort of energy flowing between them.
Proper means of repair- whacking it with a big hammer.
The perfect counterpoint to the first two sentences in that frame.

The Nursery is the scene of the 'death'of Agatha's brother, the fact that the Castle had forgotten IRS existence may be portentous, as may Higgs absenting himself before they all go there. If he is Agatha's brother, might the nursery remember him?

Nevermind it's established Higgs is somewhat sweet on Zeetha of course.
I love the background imagery in many of these comics. Little gags like today's make me smile.

So, now we have Lucrecia talking to herself. It is good to be reminded that she is aware of the Laws of Narrative Inevitability- back in the day she realized she needed to re-write herself from being the Mad Scientist's Beautiful Daughter into being the Hero's Devoted Wife in order to achieve anything, and that seems to have worked out well for her (mostly).

I thought Lucrezia was unable to take over Zola...
Either she's taking advantage of Zola's weakened state, or Zola's faking it with Lucrezia's memories.

Methinks it's more interesting than just 'Zola's faking it.' Could be a melding of persona in place due to trauma and the healing process.
