Perhaps.

I have been attracted to men, and women for that matter, who are shorter than myself, but I do shamefully admit that I never seriously consider relationships with them. I'm not put of by a wide variety of other potentially discomforting qualities, so I'm not entirely sure why either, only that I'm vaguely uncomfortable with the thought of being taller than my significant other. Which is surprisingly common around here. I'm a healthy 5'6" and there are a surprising lack of persons taller than myself, at least those counted amongst my acquaintances and of decent interest anyway. It's quite frustrating actually. Perhaps I should just abate my discomfort and date someone shorter than myself.

As a rather tall man myself, I can say that the feeling of making one's mate feel safe is a pleasant one. I'm 6'3", and the last woman that I was with was 5'6". Still, I find tall women quite attractive, and I'm not interested in being 'in charge' of a relationship; I prefer an equal partnership.

Well as way of introduction,

Single white hetrosexual male,
height-5'7", weight-more than a feather
Hair-brownish blond, Eyes- grey with glasses
body type- commonly referred to as stout, most recently "fire hydrant stout" (direct quote)
drinks (beer snob, whiskey snob)
smokes the occasional cigar

looking for a female willing to put up with all my hobbies, feisty a plus, only serious offers please, inquire within.

In my opinion women want a man taller than them so that they can feel safe. Think about it if you hug somone shorter they tend to place their head to your chest and you pull them in and lean over them. A short man can't do that. (No offense.)

As for the height issue, I have found it somewhat troublesome, to my dating, being on the low side of average as well.  However a number of my admittedly limited successful (for a period of time) relationships have all been with women who claimed that one of the big reasons they started dating me was because I made them feel safe. I always felt it was more of a presence issue than a physical issue as to weather a woman felt safe in my arms. But hey that is all anecdotal anyway. What do I know.

men feel threatened by women who are taller than them, if only subconsciously.  This is why I can't wear high heels Sad (I'm 5'10")
Might as well, you're all ready an inch over me!  Grin

I was working at the pub tonight, and there was this gorgeous girl - amazing form, (frankly) fantastic bust, pretty as can be... but she must have been at least 6' even. Unfortunately, yes. It may well be subconcious, but women taller then me - beautiful, or not - make me somewhat uncomfortable. This is a simple fact, not some old caveman mentality. Or perhaps it's both. Either way, it is the way it is. Doesn't mean I haven't become grand friends with taller girls, but they never really factored into... 'prospects.'

As for making the woman feel safe, well. Whether that is a concious or subconcious priorty for a woman to want her man to feel safe - I don't know. All I know is that for me, who is not hugely tall but nor am I short, making the gal feel safe is a great pleasure and a bit of a priority. Call me old fashioned, I want her to be not overly comfortable with me, but that she know I'll go the extra mile to protect her - from whatever.

Again, say its old fashioned if you must - Family comes first, friends second, myself if I've time. The girl starts as a friend, of sorts, and if she's important enough to be considered family, well. I hope she feels safe around me, I do.

Even not so tall, I understand I have have quite an undeniable but not overpowering 'presence,' when I'm with a group. Probably comes from being the bouncer often enough, I'd wager.

Many people are influenced by the norm more than they would care to admit. Typically, the public eye sees the man of the relationship before the woman. The wife may be called 'Mrs. John Doe,' but I've much more rarely heard the husband called 'Mr. Jane Doe.' The wife may work, but the husband is the 'head of the house.' A man could feel threatened by a taller woman because height can be seen as a sign of power and the man is expected to be in charge.

Of course, these are just general thoughts and I'm not addressing anyone in particular. Personally, I like tall women, as I've already said, but I would find it a bit odd to be with someone taller than I am because I'm 6'3" and rarely meet anyone at all who's taller than that. Still, though I prefer equal partnership in a relationship, I can't say with any certainty that my feelings are entirely uninfluenced by the norm no matter how much I may want to think so.

Haha. Makes me miss my dog. I love the apartment I'm in with all its turn of the century goodness, but I wasn't able to bring my big dopey dog so it gets kind of lonely.

There really should be someplace out there to put an ad for a platonic cuddle partner.

I like my 'lap' dog big enough to double as a guard dog and running partner. But besides the point, joined the army and missed my warm living blanket ever since. My mom put it best in an early argument with my stepdad. "The dog was here first" lol, of course that was just a shizu, but still, best foot warmers available are dogs. Best tummy warmer, cats. Best overall bed warmers... Wink one guess.

Stole my witty retort, you did!  Cheesy

I don't have one myself, but I've a wonderful wool blanket from the Ukraine.  It's got a lot of great traits that I'd want in a significant other: warm, attractive, eastern european, and doesn't give me any crap. hahaha.  (I can also keep it in a cedar chest all summer w/o attracted the attention of the authorities.)  Wink

I read the advert. They're the only bits that don't fit. Trouble is I'm not sure I can give either of them up.

Looks aside-and frankly they aren't that important, all I want is someone who doesn't object to heavy metal, palaeontology, sci-fi and steam engines. I can agree to disagree on pretty much anything else bar young earth creationism.

New research suggests that an hourglass figure might not be the best.  More linear women are stronger, better able to handle stress, and may be more well-off financially.
