I thought I would post up here. I have gotten into a new hobby that can fit into this thread. Whip cracking and whip making. I am currently working on a steampunk style florida cow whip. I have designed the handle now am in the process of gathering items to build it. I will start a new thread on it when I start the build process. I plan on making it to be about 6 feet long not including the handle, fall or cracker. Over all it should be about 10 feet. I cant wait to get it done.

works to keep your trousers up and as a defensive weapon as well.

I've started making slings.. I like primitive weaponry.
I've come up with something similar to a sling but more rigid in structure. Shaped like a hand held scythe with the 'blade' a curved channel. Instead of slinging a rock or projectile, I'll use cogs with tapered, sharpened teeth. Of course, the idea is still in planning stage and the raw materials to be 'manipulated' but should turn out very good. |

If you wear a hat, simply stow a cord-and-leather sling in the crown of the hat. Secret compartment anyone?
Add a few rocks or lead pellets and you're in business.
The Roman army used lead or fired-clay "bullets" for it's slingers.

Lets not forget the rare shoe/boot dagger. A blade that is spring loaded, and is hidden in the sole/tip of the shoe/boot; and triggered by latch.

Quite feasible and relatively easy to make. However rather than a chain I would use probably a rope. Lose some strength and weight but it would be a damn sight quieter! Come to think of it, you could compensate for the weight by using a lead line.(the kind used in fishing nets) Arvis |

Have you considered the crossbow? I've been messing with Crossbows since 2004, and I admit I'm quite good. This was just fooling around at a range 50 feet.   Aside from my beloved Blowguns and meat cleavers, I love crossbows. I have to replace the string on my pistol crossbow, though. |

I miss my crossbow.
Hands too arthritic to pull it now, though.
(wasn't a crank type - just a foot-pull)
I'll get around to getting another.
I used to like
experimenting with different points.
I had an 80# pistol bow
that I LOVED dearly.
*I* think a silly string gun would be a hoot!

I didn't mention it because surely after fifteen pages, the blowgun/cane has already been done? When we lived in GA, we kept three blowguns on a rack behind the couch. And a decorated coffee can full of darts on the coffee table. There was a target and two silhouettes beside the television. You could reach behind you , get a blowgun, load, and shoot ... while watching television.  True story. A very popular activity considering the state of television programming, even in the late 80's. Back to the imaginary- The dart supply could be worn on one's belt- sort of a 'hey look at my kids' wallet photo-style affair. Just 'drop' the dart holder, pop the top of the cane... Then all one needs (theoretically, of course) is a nice collection of South American tree frogs, or a thorough knowledge of common house plants.  And color coded darts, of course. (Safety first!) |

ms. dwyer, if your hands prevent you from cocking a crossbow, use a belt over the shoulder like a purse strap, with an "s" hook on it. you lean/squat down a bit and hook the string, then stand up to cock the crossbow. looks rather odd but works just fine. you still need your hands to guide everything but they don't take the abuse they would otherwise.
depending on the bow, two hooks in two of the belt holes will work better and stay out of the inner workings better.
ooh almost forgot! if you want a crossbow at a cheap price...make one!
there are plenty of plans out there to make medieval bows that have no metal parts at all.
I helped a buddy make one and it worked great. we ended up making a better prod by laminating the wood with PL premium adhesive, which is basically an equivalent of liquid nails (but superior if you ask me)
it's powerful enough that an errant shot bounced off the side of a forklift then a steel support beam and still went through a case of soda, spraying pop everywhere.
the only metal we used in it was two screws to align and pivot on for the trigger bar.

And if you made one you could make a gastrophetes, an ancient style which relies on you leaning against it with your stomach to cock it. (hence the name belly bow) |
