Reading through all this I recalled a weapon from the very cyberpunk anime Battle Angel Alita, regretably I was unable to find an image. The weapon was a rocket driven hammer. Something like that could be easily steamed. As well, being a hammer, it retains it's utilitarian intent.

That wrench does sort remind me of a hunga-munga, a West African throwing weapon forged in one piece with blades and hooks at various angles for game hunting. Buffy fans may remember her holding one in the opening credits for a while.

I am considering maybe trying a set of tools that can double as weapons...
Any other ideas? My creativity has hit a block in this. Hey Cap'n. I can't get the cutlass or a machete into the bars... I do prefer edged weapons myself. Yah, have the cane sword but it's more sword than cane. So now I have canes and am seeking a local sensi who will read Cunningham and instruct. Most of the "cane arts" I've found deal with more specific designs of "sticks" most of which do not work as walking sticks... Cunningham was mentioned earlier in this tread, but here he is again from 1912: http://ad1542.tripod.com/cunningham.pdfHe makes some good points about some aspects of the cane versus a blade, such as being able to grab both ends in a Double Guard... A cane for defence has finger grooves cut into the shaft near the bottom... There are pros and cons to straight versus a crook. I don't *need* a cane myself, but carrying one around as an exercise in "social engineering" has been interesting... The way ppl are more accomodating on the sidewalks... the way car drivers actually slow down and don't honk at you? (Usually they try and avoid you by swerving w/out dropping their yell phones?) Seems there is some unwritten rule that it's especially bad to wack the disabled?) Small children and little old ladies offer up their seats on the public conveyances? Pretty fun! I stole the cane I have now off one little old lady, so it's a tad short for me but serves well as swaggerstick and for practice. Thing is, the cane also tucks in my belt w/tip peaking out from under my long coat, which looks very swordie... The knob/cane top "hooks" into my belt but can be drawn w/just a tug... The problem with any weapon is that it can be taken away from you and used against you. And nothing is going to be safe or very useful w/out proper training, if you are contemplating using *anything* as a weapon... I assume no self-respecting SP would be seen with any of the lameooo sticks that most seniors use these daze. Often aluminum and plain w/zero decoration. Odd when ppl spend time on their appearance otherwise. The cane sword has a gold (Chinese-style) dragon as a handle and is v.cool looking... Fair winds and following seas LcoK |

I got my cane from www.canemasters.com and according to their site, one of their customers that had a cane with the finger grooves near the bottom and had a more diamond shaped cross section than round got himself tagged by the TSA at the airport for it. |

How about long bows and specialized crossbows? -Maybe with modified tips for use against the gas envelopes of airships? A 40 to 50lbs draw weight should be great on this bow. have you ever been hit with a 50 lb. bow? its no fun at all. i once knew someone with a mini crossbow and he took me by surprise with it. luckily for me he took the tip off the bolt so it just left a hell of a welt for a month or two. so to me it doesnt exactly seem like reasonable weapon to carry for role-play or whatever the intended purpose was. p.s. it seems like u.k. weapons laws are much more strict than those in the u.s. maybe we should follow your example. |

Used to hold an archary instructors qualification and the lb's is only at a certain draw length. I have a 37lb draw longbow myself, yet because i have long arms (i'm like a monkey man  ) i draw to nearly a 50lb pull! i believe that the weight is only for 26inches draw and i pull nearly 30inch! Oh and 40lb pull will cause serious damage if it hits someone and might even kill them! look for a low lb'age, under 30lb, and look for foam tiped arrows on re-enactment websites! |

Swordsticks are nice but very illegal in the UK, whereas my Nunchuk cane is just lawful, as you have to break the full fuctional cane down and reassemble them into Nunchuks takes about 15 secondswalking around openly with Nunchuks outside of a csde or bag will get you arrested, as a functional cane you can stroll around without a case or bag.

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned blackjack.
easy to make with some leather and ball bearing (or almost anything inside, but I lik eball bearings)
for costume, I like the idea of foam based giant renches, as they would not weigh too much.
as a mix, if you have a glove with some weights on the back (brass plate, almost gauntlet style) but it doesn't have to be as intricate.. more ornamental. then add a smallish chain from the glove that would go up your sleeve through a couple of velcro fasteners.
the chain would look ornamental when worn normally, but is also detachable so that the glove turns into a weight on the end of a chain.
fancy animatronic experts could make the hand open/close using a remote control wire threaded through the chain, then you could use it to retrieve things from a distance. ;-)
so, there you have some basic -> fancy steps. :-)

The link to the cane fighting was posted earlier by Glass, but they have some other interesting pages. I remember having my lug skudded by a glove with a iron liggy (ballbearing) in it and it didn't half hit hard. Reading the bit about sap gloves on that site reminded me of that. |
