So I'm starting to create a Steampunk outfit, and I thought being ex military, I'd like to do an explorer style outfit. So I've been looking for Boer War khaki uniforms, but the only place I could find that sold a decent tunic was Sutlers and they're very expensive for someone on such a tight budget.
Does anyone else know a good source for Boer War style khaki Officers' tunics, or similar safari jackets?
I've begun work on some rather nifty gadgets too. making a custom sam browne belt to hold a back-baldric for some kind of scoped gatling-rifle, and a hip holster for a ray gun, as well as a few other hunting gizmowatchets.

WOW... makes me glad that I'm doing Steampunk, and not Reenacting the period..... for the price of the coat and trousers and a Double Sam Brown belt,, I could buy a whole lot of fabric and just make it myself..... dang... for that price, I could almost afford to uniform an entire company.... If you're on a budget, learn how to sew, or learn a skill or craft that you can trade with someone that knows how to sew. Three yards of $5.00 a yard khaki... it's not "Period" but I think the look is right. If your interested, I could post kinda how I made it..... |

I have goods from the Boer war... No clothing, but furniture and a travelers trunk? Yes. My family was shipped to America because of it too...

Yea, I may go with a Khaki Bush Jacket instead, I'd found Sutlers before, and just found the price of that jacket/trousers insane. Although for a historically accurate piece for re-enacting purposes, its probably ideal. Not so for the budget steampunk with very few cogs to rub together. Still, the Bush jacket could work... maybe a modification to the collar, and new shiny buttons...
I've got some experience with leatherworking, so I was planning on making the Sam Browne belt myself... certainly would cost a lot less than they're asking at Sutlers. lol

Had I been properly inclined toward the culture when I was traveling extensively, I would have taken advantage of opportunity. If any of you find yourselves in places such as Islamabad or Bogota or any other such exotic place where tailoring is cheaper (yet excellent) than where I reside, I recommend you take your desired patterns and photos with you, as the tailors in such places are more than willing to create what you need. While we were in Kabul, a very good friend of mine had a tunic made from a still taken out of an adventure movie set in the Victorian era. As it was, I had my entire wardrobe of shirts made in these places, all French cuffs, of course, and several suits, some leather jackets and bags of various utility.

We've done the safari look in the past, and found that a modern, khaki colored BDU shirt from a military surplus dealer can do the trick. You need to bring in the waist with a belt (leather or matching fabric), and you can certainly dress it up with fancy buttons, epalets, and a few cartridge loops.
These can be had for less than $20 in the US, and should be available in the UK, since plain khaki is generally surplus from the British army!
I like to start with a completed garment when I can; it makes the mdoifications much simpler. To further camoflauge the origins of the garment, distress it! Nothing like a bullet hole burned through the shoulder to distract from the modern buttonhole details!

I can do arts & some crafts, and I'm even musically inclined, but, I can't sew.  |
