Author Topic: Steampunk Wallpaper a Day - querying the collective  (Read 25386 times)

Hello, ladies, gentlemen, and other.

I'm primarily a lurker here on the board, as I try to keep my damn fool mouth shut unless I have something to say. Well, I finally do.

After searching mostly in vain for a place to get steampunky desktop wallpaper, I finally bit the bullet and realized I would have to do it myself. I've started SteampunkWallpaper.com, and am going to make one wallpaper a day for (gulp) a year. That means 356 wallpapers. All Creative Commons licensed, and mostly full of gears, pipes, steam and grunge. Tileable, fullscreen, wallpaper, I'm working on it all. I've got the first 15 days worth up now, and am working on today's as soon as I finish this post.

Here's where I need help. I have a list of things I want to do (mechanical corset, steam powered vulture, inventor's desk) that I want to do, but it isn't 340 ideas worth! If any of you have any ideas about your dream wallpaper, or see something on the site you'd think is almost right but not quite, please let me know.

General feedback about the site is welcome, also. I'm new to CSS and other such, so I'd love some comments or critiques. I'm also looking for some models/personas to feature in my wallpapers. If anyone would like to volunteer pictures, or would think it would be keen to star in a wallpaper or two, drop me a comment.

Thank you!

I really like this idea, I've been searching the web (unsuccessfully) for days now looking for a good desktop image, it's nice that theres an actual website now.

You might want to work on the overlapping words and pictures a bit though.

Thank you for the feedback, Vincent.

Question; what browser are you using? The site looks ok in Firefox, but IE seems to break some of my CSS, and I can't figure out how to fix it...

Yeah, I'm running IE. I have no idea how scripting and stuff works, at least not CSS. Good luck with the site!

I really like those designs!  Now if only I can mod my laptop to go with them.  The LadyBird is my favorite.

Hmmm ... Steampunk wallpapers ...

- Locomotive races
- A couple taking a stroll in a beautiful Victorian promenade. The couple are clockwork/steampowered robots.
- A Nautilus style submarine battling with a whale or a giant octopus
- In the same previuos line, an airship battling an airkraken
- Steampunk skycraper (Metropolis style)
- A scene based in the book "The Huge Hunter, or The Steam Man of the Prairie"
- In the same line, a scene based in the "life" of Boilerplate
- Life of Nikola Tesla
- Life of Isambard Kingdom Brunel

My head is packed of steamy ideas  Grin

I think William Morris wallpaper is quite steamounk. Not full of gears and that, but favoured by Queen Victoria.

Edit: Oh, you mean desktop wallpapers...

An impressive start to an ambitious project, and a new entry in my bookmark list.

I, too, see overlapping text, using Opera 9.51.

I strongly recommend using the W3 online HTML validator. Your front page shows 56 validation errors, mostly relating to your table and paragraph tags; I suspect these are the cause of the problem.

Oh I love those! *bookmarks*
The one with the pocketwatch is my desktop background now.  I can't wait to see what else you come up with.  And good luck!

Bravo Mouse,

well done - I look forward to seeing more of your work.
I love to see some Nautilus like submarines or undersea inspired wallpapers...

Or perhaps proper Victorian automata...

no matter what inspires you I am sure it will look great

Good lord, I've finally found something to replace Alice Parade on my desktop.

*Ahem* I mean, good work, I look forward to seeing what else you come up with.

I, personally, would very much enjoy seeing hot air balloons, a mad scientist's laboratory, and something involving mice and/or pirates. Or pirate mice.

I really like the idea of the pocketwatch and blotter thing--trompe l'eoil! (if I spelled that right)  I'd be interested in more along that line, dealing with the screen as a flat surface or shallow space.

Heh, and I was looking for wallpaper just last week. Just had to make my own.

Here's some challenging ideas:

-Steampunk playground
-A chart of air krakens
-Popular video game consoles steampunk-ised
-A mechanical penguin lost in a group of penguins
-Sweeney Todd
-Steampunk teddy bear (has to be furry, no metal skin)
-Arabian steampunk
-Something like this http://www.geocities.com/perry_peterson_1999/mechanical-anatomy.jpg
-A steampunk picnic, on the moon
-Steam cowboys (don't get enough love, overshadowed by the victorians, lol)
-A display of all the planets in the solar system (with personified faces like La Voyage Dans La Lune http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_Voyage_dans_la_Lune)

Something more specific:

What about a shot of a bar table in a seedy district? A cheap dirty table cloth with a worn pattern on it, yellow ivory dice, a raygun, maybe an ornate knife, cigarettes in a bronze ashtray, and dirty playing cards (http://gentlemansclubstock.deviantart.com/ for some excellent reference, NSFW.) Then, at the bottom right, maybe a severed robot hand?

Hmmm, how about from the following:

Submarines
Land cruisers
Airships and Dirigibles
Aether ships
Luminous Flux gatherers
Laboratories
Towers
Steam Automatons
Steam powered carriages
Analytical Machines
Frankensteinian Experiments
Galvanic Experiments

How about a controll pannel?
Something like this:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Only with more dials, wood, and meters!

Ah, just found a good exmaple but not desktop size;
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
And needs a few more meters Wink

My idea was to have the main machine filling the entire desktop, not like a photo of one but as though your computer screen is the front of an ancient radio transmitter!
Hope thats understandable Smiley

Wow! I love these ideas. I realize that many of them are made of too much awesome to be done in a day, but I'm also going to try to do a 'weekly' or 'monthly' wallpaper that is much more detailed.

Hm... now, where to find a bunch of steampunked people willing to pose for pictures?....

How about the M.C. Esher image of the black and white birds interlocking but with gears interlocking?

If you see what I mean... sort of...
