I stumble across this laptop mod yesterday, and was most taken with it. I felt it was very worthy of sharing here with everyone else. Enjoy. http://www.macmod.com/content/view/404/192/

A true alternative subculture is one that not only questions the social status quo but poses viable solutions to some of the perceived underlying problems. Difference from the norm is not the same as superiority to the mainstream unless it can be argued that the difference is positing a better way.

No problem. There are a few other really good mods throughout that site, the only other one thats somewhat steampunkish is the "GeigerPod Mod". Making an iPod case out of an old Geiger counter. Very ingenious. http://www.macmod.com/content/view/410/194/

And besides ingenious, it's also hilarious.

It's a shame what they did with that geiger counter mod. There was so much potential there. Why repaint it? When I saw the first images, I had such high hopes. I guess I'll just have to do it better myself...

I agree, it was much nicer with it's origional colors. Sounds like you need to go out and get yourself a gieger counter and show us how it really should be.

I dunno...I kinda think that laptop is butt-ugly. It seems like a lot of effort expended for a not very interesting final result. The bottom half is just a regular laptop painted a different color and the screen mod just looks tokenist and tacked-on. There's no sense of style or overall asthetic theme. It looks modded for the sake of modding, and not in the good way. All in all....not a big fan.

Yup... clever, but only half-finished.
Talking of mods, Datamancer - did you get the keyboard to the Computational Engine working? I acquired an old Royal recently, and I'd be interested in any ideas.

Nope, not just yet, It's all built in my head already but I just haven't gotten around to the formality of putting it all together yet. What kind of Royal is it? 2, 5, upright 10?
Hit me on PM and I'll go over some of the design plans I had for it. A Royal shouldn't be too much different than an Underwood so the design should fit.

The laptop mod was because of necessity, he got the thing for free in a cardboard box. . .

I agree, although it would have looked so much nicer in a wood & brass theme as well.

Agreed!
Ideas on how to go about building this thing? Its something that, even if you just look at the keyboard, is exactly what I've wanted done for a desktop mod.

That is officially the only Mac I've yet seen that I did not wish to strike with a mallet. Nice work!
As for that other one: it's nice looking, but actually using it looks next to impossible. Thirty keys? Me thinks it be missing something... Come to think of it, has anyone actually seen it turned on yet? Don't get me wrong--it's a true piece of fine art. I just don't think it's fair to compare it to the comps that are actually usable...

Yeah this is the third or fourth time this has come up on this forum, but that ironmonkey mod is at least 5-7 years old by this time, and I've never seen a single photo of it turned on. It's really cool, but I think it's more or less just a prop piece.

The road warrior had a lot of potential, but it seems like it ended up being rushed. The display looks great from the front, and I like some of the mechanical bits on the back, but the paintjob is god awful. It would have worked so much better with a rusted metal look, or, if going for kitsch, the back panel made from a fallout shelter sign. The bottom is a disgrace. That gold-tone looks terrible, and the "Designed by Apple in Cupertino" style of the keyboard and housing defrays whatever post-nuclear holocaust goodness that was achieved by the monitor. It needs needed to be far grittier, maybe with holes rusted through the back panel or bullet scoring or something. It could have been really cool, but just fails to come together.

The second laptop mod is part movie prop. Thats the keyboard from the typewriter from Naked Lunch.
I'm almost positive.

I noticed the other day that "Michaels" (craft store) has several varieties of retro typewriter-key style beads that could be repurposed. They have a small hole through the long axis, of course, which could be filled in....
