Ladies and Gentlemen:

This thread is a bit of a continuation from previous posts (e.g. http://brassgoggles.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,31438.0.html) regarding the Aesthetic of the Synth-pop musician, Mr. Thomas Dolby (http://www.thomasdolby.com/) .  It seems Mr. Dolby has adopted some of the Steampunk aesthetic, noting that he was already carrying a somewhat Diesel/Steam persona back in 1982 with his single hit "She blinded me with science."

Thomas Dolby- She Blinded Me With Science (Released '82, Billboard #5)

I recently had the pleasure to meet Mr. Dolby at the South by Southwest (SXSW) Music/Film/Tech festival, last week, where he started his "Time Capsule" tour and where he presented at the TED tech conference..(http://www.ted.com/) as the music director of the organization.

Here's some photos of your truly, and the lovely Darwin Prophet, musician extraordinaire together with Mr. Dolby.

Ensuing a very brief conversation, he admitted to being more of a "uchronist" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uchronia), thus allowing himself to mix Diesel, Edwardian and Steampunk ideas...

Do you have any opinions?  Plans to pay him a visit during his tour?  For me it was a nostalgia trip as I was a Junior-Highschool student (7-9th grade secondary) in Mexico City back in the early 80's.  I'm currently trying to revisit some of my "proto-steampunk origins", and listening to a lot of "New Wave" ha, ha!

My apologies, I had a bit of a problem uploading the new post. Seems to be working now.  I've reported it to the Engine Room.

Cheers,

Thank you for noting that, Dharmagraphics.  You can follow the tour at the website I give or just follow his tweets @ThomasDolby .  For those of yoou (be it Diesel or Steampunk), I encourage you to pay him a visit and leave a 30 second message for  his "Time Capsule," which will be part of a project of his (and more I cannot say).

Being the Musical Director of TED, he is also associated with a very interesting group of experts in various fields, some of which have a lot to say in terms of the future of technology in general, and also green technology (relevant to some of our -and in general the maker  community), that is sustainable living in the 21st. C. (note TED is a non-profit organization).  I had the chance to also be put in contact (Twitter) with another TED senior member, Ms. Rachel Armstrong (https://www.facebook.com/livingarchitect ), a Brit. architect who favours the usage of biochemistry as a way to biologically engineer construction materials, as a way to promote a more sustainable interaction between human dwellings and the environment - pretty radical stuff but interesting.

Anyhow, I thought it'd be interesting even for those too young to remember him like I do from my Middle School years... (knowledge of the past really never held us back in out community....)

Cheers,
J. Wilhelm
