So, I have started the great novel that is in me.
Since everyone's trying to write The Next Great American Novel, I'll move the Latvia before I'm done, so there won't be any competition. After all, who tries to write the next great Latvian novel?
Jokes aside, I am indeed writing a dieselpunk noir hard-boiled detective story, something of a mashup of genres with a fondness for snark and lampshades.
I was wondering is anyone had any brilliant ideas for plot or title, I'm drawin' me a blank here)?
Also sort of hoping that I could post little snippets of the text, teasers for the Brassgoggles crowd, so I could get encouragement and scathing criticism (well, mildly scathing) from the experts.
Any thoughts?

I've been trying to create a role play on this forum with a similar theme, although I've pretty much given up on it by this point. By the way, I don't know a whole lot about the film noir genre (this may be why I had so much trouble trying to create an rp with that theme), so I am not a good resource for how to make it. I am more familiar with the pulp adventure flavor of dieselpunk (another very common source of inspiration for the subgenre).

If you don't have ideas for plot, what do you have ideas for? It seems like the first thing to have really.
Noir really refers to the visual style of the movies, what you're after is likely the more hard-boiled detective novels like those by Marlowe et al.

Instead of a detective tracking down some artifact ala the Maltese Falcon, how about something dealing with biological warfare. A series of what looks like murders, but are test runs for an attack with a virus weapon.

What would you like to read about? Write that. What are your favorite subjects, how would you approach them? In other words, have you ever read something and gone 'nah, it wouldn't happen like that' - use that as a springboard. Actually, I know very little about dieselpunk, so I'll just be quiet now...

Sorry it's taken me so long to respond, all. Been volunteering with Americorps NCCC and the first two weeks of training have been wonderfully hectic.
In reverse order!
Pakled: (drone) You are smart. You are Pakled.
I like to read snappy dialogue and fun characters with genre conventions beeing chucked out the airlo k.
Atterton: actually, I'm toying with a murder mystery involving robots.
As for my writing method, I start with setting and, far more importantly, characters. Starting with plo okay for one book, but I'm starting a series. With dull characters. I'm suno. But, it's a matter of preference.
As for film noir's definition, I'm going by the tvtropes page, whivh seems to run the two together. I accept any corrections, it's hardly my speciality.
Zeppilin Kaptain: Well, tvtropes and google work wonders for me! Good luck.
