Just finished these the other day. What do you think?

Steampunk/DaVinci style of back-mounted Icarus wings. Arbutus, cherry, black walnut, brass, copper and some bits. They wings are pulley driven. Two ropes with walnut handles come down over the front. You pull on them and the wings rise and fall accordingly.

The arbutus for the wings was reclaimed from a salvage yard. Took a fair amount of work to clean it up. It was in huge 3x8 boards that were 5ft long and all destroyed. But it ended up looking pretty good in the end so I'm happy I went the long way.

Thanks!

I just realized that the pics are actually of the wings when they were about 99%. The dowel that supports the wings is not cut flush and finished. As they appear in the video though, is the final state.

And, of course, yes... very impressive work.  I think I prefer the wing style that finished level with the shoulders rather than rising above, but there is no denying that those are a work of art.  Well done.

Awesome work.
Looks very Da Vinci.
Have you tried them yet? not from something high obviously, maybe the top of your house?  Grin

Haha no I have not tried them from the roof of my house!

@Major WIlloughby

You can stop them at any point, so it is not required that they be brought fully upright. Thanks for posting the video!

Thanks everyone for the kind words! I'm more than happy to answer any questions about construction method, materials choices, etc

Quite bully! One must respect your design, choice of materials, and craftsmanship. They do look ancient!

I can only echo everyone else. Really great work, and that's an excellent pulley system.

Are they heavy?

Thanks!

They weigh about six pounds. Lighter than you would think actually. The final measure was somewhere between 6 and 6.5 lbs.

Wow, they are great. The wings I am planning to make have a similar approach, but different materials and mechanics. Looking at yours tells me that I am on the right track. Thanks!

Beautiful work!  I'd started plans for something very similar to this using repurposed ceiling fan blades for the wing segments, but I like yours much better than what I was thinking.
