So I was doing some image searching for a steampunk looking man and I found a lot of pictures of foppish looking noblemen with top hats and coat-tails. While that is definitely one aspect of steampunk, it's not at all the image that attracts me to steampunk. I'm more attracted to rougish looking air-pirate types. It then occured to me that there are many different archetypes that comprise the steampunk collective consciousness (wow, how Jungian). Anyway, I was hoping you could help me breakdown all the individual character types that we find in steampunk.
Here are a few examples to get started:
The Airpirate
The Mad Scientist
The Boy/Girl Genius
The Foppish Nobleman
The Military Officer
The Greasy Mechanic

I could go on, but I want to share the fun...

Depending on how much you accept the occult in your story, there's always the novice mage experimenting with Forces Beyond His Control,  Lovecraft-style.

A pleasant way to pass a few minutes or for when you need a break from some more monotonous task.

Half the fun is to make up your own character to fit in with your own interests and personality.

So I would say that the number of characters is infinite.  Especially as one person can change character depending upon their mood/wardrobe/fashion each day/part of a day.  Also one develops as one gets older - there is still mutton dressed as lamb even in steampunk - and also acquires more money to make/buy something new to add to an existing character.

That is fun, thank you.

A circus/side show/freak show appearance is also not unheard of in steampunk, I think.

This is where creativity comes from—experiment, do something different, maybe even something forbidden, and voila! A breakthrough occurs! Ha! Ha! We are released! The world is created anew! Do something backwards, break your own traditions, the barrier breaks; destroy the world as you know it, let the new in.''

The joy of Steampunk, to me, resides in its intrinsic realism and subtly shaded areas: anything can, in essence, be steampunk. Now, naturally I balk at the notion of simply affixing gears to a thing, or daubing it in a faux-brass finish to achieve this aesthetic, but with clever application of one variable here, and just the right amount of another there, even the most anodyne of persons or objects can be easily transformed into a genuine artifact. For in the steampunk world there are necessarily those who fall between the cracks of the more visible archetypes; who, for instance, builds the countertop over which the back-alley merchant sells the airpirate his ectenic force-powered blunderbuss? My interest lies with those of such everyday "poly-men".

My tuppence-worth:

While costuming and role-play is simpler with the acknowledged archetypes and caricature players (the afore-mentioned sky-pirate-gentleman-adventurer-explorer-scientist) , when writing a fictive world there is a need for all the minor supporting players, NPCs, and even the ability for the major characters to grow, expand, and even be less-than-heroic to do something other than be tokens or Mechanary-Sues.

Oh, you should enjoy Adele.  It is a French movie, but she is a heroine in the Amelia mold with a Gallic flair.
