So we've herd of or even done thisBut that was a one off, maybe anual for the time traveler day commited; But I like this idea too much to let it be a one off so I mulled it over for some time and now I would like to present to you: Steampunk Time Traveler Day!If you think you know where I'm going with this you need not read much more in detail When: Either the 14th or 21st of June (probably 21st, give you time to finish your costumes, please tell me which date you prefare)When Update: Choose the date best fitting for you! Either the 14th or 21st of June (I'll be doing the 21st ) What: A variation on this but we only do steampunk versions of "dystopian future" or "the past" (which is pretty damn steampunk anyway!) For those who don't like navigating away form BG 2) Dystopian Future - This one offers a little more flexibility. It can be any kind of future from Terminator to Freejack. The important thing to remember is dress like a crazy person with armor. Black spray painted football pads, high tech visors, torn up trenchcoats and maybe even some dirt here or there. Remember, dystopian future travelers are very startled that they've gone back in time. Some starters:
- If you go the "prisoner who's escaped the future" try shaving your head and putting a barcode on the back of your neck. Then stagger around and stare at the sky, as if you've never seen it before.
- Walk up to random people and say "WHAT YEAR IS THIS?" and when they tell you, get quiet and then say "Then there's still time!" and run off.
- Stand in front of a statue (any statue, really), fall to your knees, and yell "NOOOOOOOOO"
- Stare at newspaper headlines and look astonished.
- Take some trinket with you (it can be anything really), hand it to some stranger, along with a phone number and say "In thirty years dial this number. You'll know what to do after that." Then slip away.
2) The Past - This one is more for beginners. Basically dress in period clothing (preferably Victorian era) and stagger around amazed at everything. Since the culture's set in place already, you have more of a template to work off of. Some pointers:
- Airplanes are terrifying. Also, carry on conversations with televisions for a while.
- Discover and become obsessed with one trivial aspect of technology, like automatic grocery doors. Stay there for hours playing with it.
- Be generally terrified of people who are dressed immodestly compared to your era. Tattoos and shorts on women are especially scary.
Spend the day in character, Don't just be a time traveler when you feel like it, no, from the second that mad victorian outfit goes on its serious business, time travel (seriously fun haha ) And please don't forget to read this, the original plan for Time Traveler Day with much info on how to go about doing it Don't forget its the steampunk variation on those rules/guidelines for "Dystopian", I'm sure you can figure that out by yourselves, and "The past" And, as a matter of inerest perhaps; I'm doing the "Dystopian Steampunk Future" going around town looking like Van Pelt from Jumanji gone wrong + more brass, my mission in time is to make the future! A few ideas on what I'm going to do (along with the already suggested) : ~Hand the bus driver a load of old, new and unidentifiable coins and ask "which currencies do you recognise?" ~Give people aged bits of paper with runes on them and say "in the year 2012 you'll know what to do" ~Scan things/people with the device I am currently working on and make strange remarks: "yeeees, higher æther here..." "your phlogiston particles are behaving eratically, have you penetrated the atmosphere recently?" loudly->"Egads! This area is unsafe! *Dons gas mask*" Well I hope this idea is received well, I've already got one friend doing this for definate and a few others highly interested Happy Steampunk Time Traveling! P.S. I didn't post this in Geographical because it is not a centralized event, it can encompass the whole globe depending who takes part!

Be VERY careful where you do this. Getting shot by armed police because they thought you were a suicide bomber can put a serious crimp in your day! Downwind of perfume counters in department stores (or Lush) would probably be fine though

While I fully endorse Pretend to be a Time Traveler Day, and this spin-off, one should keep in mind when planning your activities that police and security forces for public places do not have the same sense of humor they used to.
My uncle is a Klingon, and last year he got his ship's crew together to go walk around a local mall in costume celebrating some significant trekkie day. Long story short, the four of them were promptly detained and shortly ejected by mall security. In fact, as one of my uncle's friends later confided, the security guard put his hand on his gun, preparing to draw, but my uncle was savy and amiable enough to casually talk it down to where all that happened was getting thrown out.
I would advise against ray guns, any gadgetry larger than your palm, and gas masks, actually masks of any kind.

There is a very easy way to deal with this.
Notify the police before hand that you're doing this stuff and what they can expect. That way they know you're just doing it for fun, and not a serious threat.

This is true, also posting flyers can help prepare the public for seeing something or someone that they may not expect. I prime example would be a zombie march(which are great fun by the by) where dozens or even hundreds of people dress as the living dead and parade though a town or city. Obviously this can scare the unexpected and some people are not so stable. Personally if I see a horde of zombies headed at me and I where corned the first thought in my head would be “shoot’em in da head”… so letting the public know is a positive thing, and you may get more people to join in! Bout yes, notify the local police. Tell them “there’s going to be a made up holiday. You dress up as a time traveler and interact with people. There might be stage props like gasmasks and star trek like scanners. Ect.” but in all I’d was it will be quite a lot of fun. I’ll do it on the 14th due to having plans out of state on the 21st, but there’s no reason it cant happen both days.

actually - as someone who does organise flash mobs,
part of the idea is to use the public spaces for unconventional behaviour and surprise.
Informing the public removes a part of that wonder. Informing the authorities just means you've got them on your side.

*Agrees with this* Lets not get into security issues here, I will inform police about SPTT Day, but in the past I've worn gas masks out and about and nothing has come of it. Please don't be put off by people's worries folks! As our primary poster said: Eighty-Eight.......MILES PER HOUR!!!!!!!!!! Sounds like a lot of fun.

If the Powers that be are in a humourless mood on the day(s) would it be possible to extract a reference number that we can give to them (on a visiting card) with due deference and hauteur? Which we could use to pacify the various public bodies that we are not revolutionary revisionists attempting to subvert the course of history.

I think, to do it both days can enhance the fun much more! Just think, talking about something you have done yesterday, on the 21st when today is the 14th!
"Yesterday I had a strange encounter with the pilot of one of this big people-transportation devices" on the 14th and on 21st step into the bus and do the 'coin-thing'
would need a bit of a planning and people who will be near to you on both days to get the joke
but you can at least do it for your personal entertainment.

Another idea for cryptic things to say/do to/around people: ~"In the year 2101, war was begining. It's of the utmost importance that you take this floppy disk... *gives floppy disk* you'll know what to do, save the bases!" ~start coughing and ask someone to hold your hat while you don a gas mask and start breathing easily, thank them, say something nice about thier grandkids/grandparents depending if you did future or past, and be on your way

Good to hear! I have a story very vague but mine is going to be something along the lines of: I was sent back in time to meet another time traveler who needs my help to make the future what it is going to be!
