Does anyone have a good idea on how to find good, cheap leather? I'm trying to make holsters for my steampunked NERF Maverick REV-6 and double-barrel shotgun props. Pictures, suggestions, instructions, and tips would be of help also. Thank you
Salvation Army, thrift stores, Craigslist, junk piles. Use you imagination. Many things are made of leather. Purses, boots, coats, belts, couches, ect. You can always dye it, just try to find something light, and brownish. I hate to spoil the fun but do not play with high powered lasers you will shoot your eye out, pun intended.

Defiantly. Nothing is worth the price of your site. Anything over 5mW and you should have goggles. Look for the OD (optical density) rating. The higher the OD the more the protection. Also you need the correct goggles. 532nm is green 635-650nm is read 405nm is Blu-Ray 808nm is IR IR is the most dangerous because you cant see the beam, and you wont know you are blinded till its too late.

re last post, I am sure Laserpunk meant that anything with a wavelength longer than 800nm is in the infra red - most communications lasers are for example 1300nm. The problem with IR lasers is that the eye blink response fails because infra red is beyond the visible spectrum, but still enters the eyball causing retinal scars and if you are really unlucky damage to the optic nerve. The damage is not just a function of power but distance comes into it as well. It is best to wear goggles (at last a genuine excuse) even if using sub 5mW devices as they can overpower briefly if the feedback circuit fails. Of course the laser burns out immediately after but would you want to take the risk of looking down the barrel when it happens?

You are correct. I just mentioned 808nm because its a common pump diode for green lasers. You wont see many cheap hand held lasers that are over 808nm. And without an IR filter (most cheap green lasers wont have one) you can still damage your eyes if your goggles are rated for green (532nm) only. Your goggles will need to include IR as one of the protection features. Also very few lasers come with the correct reported power output. So you can have an over powered laser and not even know about.
Nice to meet another laser enthusiast.

Cheers Laserpunk, I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time when fibre optics were introduced to telecoms! I was involved right from the early field trial days and didn't really move on until we had single mode 1300nm systems and just on the verge of WDM (wave division multiplex). Lucky man

good and cheap are often not synonymous, however as I see you are in the US I would suggest you use Sir Google to find a Tandy or Leather Factory near you: www.tandyleatherfactory.comFor holster, knife sheath, and heavy pouch (ie binoculars and instrument cases) purposes I prefer 6 oz or so cowhide but not much heavier than 8 oz. You do not need high quality carving stock such as shoulders, but a good vegetable tan (as opposed to chrome tanned) belly, bends, are both cheap and effective. Saddle Skirting is generally too stiff for our purposes and very clean shoulders and the like are reserved for fancy carving. Avoid "other leathers" such as "splits", pig, goat, deer, elk, etc as these are usually "soft tanned" for garment or upholstery use. You want stiff stuff, but you also want to avoid "rawhide" which is mainly used for drumheads, mocassin soles and Northern Plains Parfleche projects. At the brick and mortar stores you can find great deals in the "remnants bins" that you won't find in the catalog or online. You may also be able to get remnants of "latigo" which is both affordable and ideal for holsters as it is already died a deep burgundy-brown. It can easily be shaped to your sidearm or instrument by soaking the finished product in alcohol and jamming the implement into the holster, followed by forming with fingers, rounded sticks, etc. more on these processes can be found here: http://www.secretsquirrelleather.com/buildaholster.aspxhttp://www.survivalistboards.com/showthread.php?t=84650http://www.ar15adviser.com/forums/index.php?s=e5b9aa40295112fca87d95c602e45062&showtopic=15057http://www.ggaub.com/ltag/mods/holster_leather_molded_drone.htmlAlternatively, for lightweight replicas one can use Kydex, or its inexpensive thermoplastic counterpart found in opaque Clorox Bottles, Kitty Litter Bottles, and small trash cans. One can google "making a kydex holster" for more on that. yhs prof marvel

Seen today in Timonium, MD - a prop from the Will Smith movie WILD WILD WEST - seen in the opening credits and briefly, hanging on the wall of weapons in their Pullman Car. It's a Belgian-made 'Montenegrin' design, originally in .44 Winchester. A bolt has been drilled through the bore, holding the scope (actually, a broken microscope) and the firing pin nipped off the hammer. Engraved brass plates appear to be epoxied to the cylinder & ventilated tubes added. Price? $3200, with documentation. Yeah, I have the guy's email if anyone's seriously interested....

Hello! Please forgive my noobishness! I'm just about to start my first full outfit, and as a lady who doesn't do half measures, I want a nice weapon to go with it. ^_^ Because this is my first project, and I want the thing to function, I'm going to mod, rather than make from scratch. I know Nerf guns are popular, but I was wondering, has anyone modded a foam disc launcher before? I've looked around but can't find any examples. Here's what I'm working with. My intention is to turn it into 'The Ladies Compressed Air Throwing Star Gun, or Le Viper Japonisme Pneumatique Pour Madame'. XD Yeah, I know.... I've discovered that the mech will launch any flat shape, so I can mod the ammo, too. I'm going to add a belt mounted faux mini gas bottle and connect it with some steel hose, as well as attacking the whole thing with epoxy putty to smooth out the shape before I make additions like a pressure gauge ect. and give it a paint job. Can't decide on whether to paint the disc magazine or not, I quite like the transparent dayglo yellow cos it reminds me of uranium glass. Any hints, tips suggestions? Has anyone modded one before? I'll be posting updates as and when.
