So I went up to mum and dads place today to help dad clean out his workshop as they are moving house. Amongst the box of old tools I scored there was a saw handle that begged to become a gun handle. An afternoon (well - evening too) session in my workshop and I have the first draft of 'Bianca' built. Crappy camera phone picture - sorry. Anyway, I plan to keep all the brass bits brass, but I want to paint the handle and the ceramic insulator to look like ivory. I figure ivory would have been a good product to use for such parts 'way back when'. Anyone have any tips on painting parts to look like ivory? I look forward to seeing that finished

Okay so I'm very new to steampunk and this is my first attempt at a gun alteration. It was a water gun I got for my birthday and while ago... I'm kind of ashamed to post, I feeling kind of like a small child on a tricycle trying to keep up with motorcyclists. That's how it looked. And this is how it looks now. Any ideas to make it more steamy and interesting? Much thanks, Elise Von Tempest, Horticulturist.

Don't be ashamed. Looks like a perfectly decent repaint to me. Many people have made a first attempt (or even secodn and third) with much worse results!

You are most welcome milady - as far as making your little stampunk squirter steamier, you could cut the heads of brass screws (or use brass dome nuts) and glue them over the moulded screws. This may give the gun a more 'built' look. A round item (watch gear wheel?) glued on the top of the round protusion to one side of the gun may act as a dial device for setting the guns impact. Some weathering of the item with paint effect (if you are into weathering items) may add to a more realistic look. Otherwise - consider it finished and move on to the next project I say!

Picked this up at Big Lots (close out store here in the states) today while looking at toys with my oldest boy. It had an interesting look so I had to have it. IM gonna paint it and add some bits as well as a leather shoulder strap. The only thing I dont like is the "barrel". Its clear plastic and has an orange corkscrew thing inside that spins and had LEDs on it that flash in sequence. Im thinking of just frosting the clear plastic and unhooking the speakers so you cant hear the lame sound effects. Any suggestions would be appreciated, this will be my first mod for a weapon.

What kind of tools do you have to work with? Would you be able to, say, get a pair of filigreed plates of relatively thin brass (like the decorative heating vent covers they sell at hardware stores,) cut and bend them to conform to the shape of the barrel and throw something translucent under it, like a sheet of colored acetate? You'd have a vented brass barrel through which you could see the glow when you pull the trigger. Maybe bracket it with some small diameter brass or copper pipe in the recesses between the main barrel and the two strips of clear plastic, and saw off the plastic handle on the top to enhance the key shape of the gun? With the main mass of the weapon situated so low in relation to the grip, it looks like a prime candidate for conversion into a prosthetic cannon arm. You could go crazy with it and take it all the way back to your elbow with some heavy PVC pipe, some creative sawing and a lot of paint or plating. If you don't want any plastic showing, you can always bolt brass sheet down to the pipe. I don't know what the plates are called, so I sketched it out.

I like Mr. Hatchet's ideas, and yours of dropping the speaker.
If you don't have the tools to work in metal, you might try something else for a similar affect. "Masking," might give a neat effect, if you try something like this: 1. Frost the plastic (disassemble it and frost the inside) 2. Put down little rows of round stickers. Small ones, like 1/4 inch diameter, pick them up from a craft store. Lay them on in rows like the venting on the barrel of a machine gun. 3. Spray with one of them textured, "Hammered Finish" metallic spray paints 4. When dry pick off the stickers.
Now you have a metallic barrel with venting that the glow will show through.

Lolz. All it would take is finding the right bit of brass at a thrift store, and I'd want to do it your way!

Ive got tools, I do auto restorations and used to work for a sheetmetal fab company. I like your idea, especially the prosthetic arm one. Im going hunting today in search of more parts for it and will let you knw what i find.

some more pics of my bow, and some new pics of a small GASP toy gun mod I made, it's like..a revolver-flamethrower, called the Magnus, and the bow's name is the Sagitarius. I uploaded them to tinypic because...well, the files are HUGE and I didn't want to stretch rape your pages. Sagitarius{sloppy painting, and yeah, I know...a decorative gear, so scary...} Magnus {The gears on the sides of them, on the knobs, are actually used as grips to turn the nobs, which makes an orange light(that isn't in yet) come out of the front to look like fire :3

It looks kind of like tile or mosaic, but very aged. I think that tiny Arabic style of inlaid mosaic would look nice on a weapon, and yours reminds me of that.

Bill, not critizing it as that's a pretty good paint job, but I'm wondering if perhaps it looks a little too painted? like...plasticy painted?
are you planning on doing any sort of metallic texture or adding weathering? if so i HIGHLY recomend hammered spray paint and antique gold or goldleaf rub n buff, it gives an amazingly realistic effect when combined.
but that still looks decent.
