Marika: I'm a tad unconvinced by the loose belt. It doesn't look functional (not keeping up trousers, or used for a pouch, etc) or particularly decorative. It's just there.
So if I'm dead set about having something about the waist what do you think would be appropriate? I tried the outfit without the belt and it feels like it's missing something. I'd say its still missing something: the belt is good, but needs a reason to be there. I'm not sure what sort of "character" you're going for so I can't recommend a specific prop/accessory, but there begs to be something hanging off that belt, perhaps a largish leather pouch pulling the whole thing down towards one hip? A holster, a heavy compass, bag of magic tricks, whatever floats your boat. A lightaber. Yeah. That.

We should totally carpool. You used that brush for the cat and ruined my Voodoo love spell. Now every time I pick up the phone I hear soft, sad purring.

Actually, for me, it was more the looseness of the belt. Loose belts usually mean they're there to carry something (like an accessory, pouch, holster, light sabre, etc) and you don't want it digging into your flesh, or it's a very elaborate/decorative low-slung belt (and you're layering it with a number of other ones). Otherwise, it could be there to belt in a garment to give it shape (which it's not doing, since your top is tight as is) or it's holding up trousers (again, not). I think if you did it up tighter, it'd instantly look more complete and less just dangling there and too big for you. That said, I do agree with Utini420 that an accessory on the belt is the way forwards. I highly recommend a pouch of some sort. I keep my wallet in one and it's really quite handy.

I actually got a compliment from the lady running the Starbucks at the last DragonCon: I actually use all the pockets and pouches I mix in with all my costuming, and apparently after all the Klingons and Wookies she was happy to deal with someone who could actually reach their own wallet!

A pouch of some sort really does sound appealing. A holster's also something worth looking to.
My sense of character-self thus far is kind of loose so I might just have to try a bunch of different things. Thanks for the ideas Utini and costumemercenary.

My only comment would be that the stick is too tall for you. A functional cane should be about the same height as your wrist from the floor. Much shorter and it's a swagger stick, much longer and it's a staff...

That's not actually the canes fault, more of a logistical problem with an impromtu tripod and me being a step lower than the cane. I'll be sure to actually find my tripod for the next series so nothing so awkward looking happens again.

Here is a photograph (a rather bad one) of me in my first not-quite-yet completed outfit... Urgh. Bad smile. Also, I am quite devoid of goggles, which would make this so much better. My last pair broke, and were not Steampunk. ;_; And I haven't the money to get new ones, though I found a pair of real brass ones for $20.. Vest and pants: majorly repaired completely trashed from Gabriel Brothers, $1 each Boots: The only shoes I own. Victorian Medicine Pouch: Made myself, I-thank-you-very-much Way-too-big-for-me handwarmers - handknit by moi

Actually, that outfit *does* call for it... I wouldn't know where to begin modding one, though, I've never been a gun-toting girl myself. Mainly a variety of knives and swords. Oh! I need a chain for my Silverleaf knife so that I may attach it to my vest! That is an amazing knickknack I was gifted after lusting after one for so very long...
