Not sure if anyone else saw Catalyst tonight but for at least a few seconds the host was standing outside the Oxford steampunk exhibition :3

That would be most bodacious, but it's more likely that they just needed something interesting to stand in front of.

Anyone who likes real steam engines (would there be any such people here? ) might like to go to the Newport Open Day, March 7 & 8. http://www.steamrail.com.au/srvtours_files/brochures/2010_Brochures/Open%20Day%20Poster%202010.pdfThere should be a number of working steam locos on display, the oldest, D 3 639 was built in 1903 so it's almost Victorian era! Yes, that's the same weekend as the Scoresby Steamfest. I'm hoping to get to both.

Oh how I wish I could go to the Ballarat swap meet, the sheer quantityof stuff would be overwhelming. However being in Adelaide may cause a few problems in getting there xD

The Ballarat swap meet is the first one I've ever seen where people needed bicycles to get around! I didn't even see half of it before I had to leave. I just wish I'd had the money to buy a few more things. (Although if I'd come home with an unrestored Model A Ford I might have had a bit of explaining to do. Hey, the cheapest one was only $6,000!)

It was amazing!!! I got there at 6:30am, went in when the gates opened at 7am, walked the whole market until 2pm (27km in total) my backpack was bulging and my arms were loaded! I will put a photo up in Flea Market Finds. Wow!!!

Hey guys, I haven't been on here for at least 3-4 months but I thought some of you might be interested in my Wonderland Tea Party next week. It's not really a "steampunk" event per se, but it's kind of spiralled out of my immediate of group of friends into something a lot bigger. So I thought why not post it here? I think a few people in the Melbourne steam community will be there. Join us for flashmobby, tea party goodness!

A question for leather workers. Has anyone been out to Leffler leather and do they stock the crafting tools dyes etc. in store or simply online. Thanks

Lefflers used to stock leather tools, dyes, lots of different types of leathers and bits & pieces (much of it for bridles & saddles). But I haven't been there for years because it's expensive and the service generally sucks.

I thought that crappy service was just my imagination (they will just ignore you at the counter). They actually seem to be worse than when they were in South Melbourne. On the plus side their Kensington shop is much more spread out and you can actually find stuff (although I do miss the musty smell of the old shop). Is there anywhere else in Melbourne that wholesales leather products and equipment? They seem to be the only place in town.

http://www.niftynotions.com.au/sell leather (including hides and offcuts), leather bags and belts, etc and were selling some of their equipment. They are not wholesalers but they might be able to meet your needs for cheaper than Lefflers. Sorontar, who knows the owners.

Wonder if they know where to get the lead shot Thanks for that Sorontar

I bought about $70 of materials and odds and ends from Nifty Notions a few weeks back, a particularly good find. I might have to drop by Leffler's next time I'm in town with some time to kill. None of my projects have "deadlines" anytime soon.
Not to mention the fact that my leather supply is currently blocking easy access to my bed.

I was at the Steam Engine open day in Scoresby and we could all see the storm coming in. They were rushing to finish the demo by the armoured personnel carrier but people started pulling their tents down etc. I decided that I better go home and as I moved to the car park, the wind picked up. It changed from a gentle breeze to a strong wind. I rang my wife (who was five minutes away) to tell her to get the clothes off the line. As I pulled out of the carpark, drops of rain started to fall. As I did a u-turn 50m away, it started raining. By the time I got another 50m down the road, the hailstones were striking my car like they were snowballs and I could see no further than the Eastlink tollway which was another 50m away. Cars were pulling over and parking under the Eastlink overpass. I went another 100m to a service station and sheltered there with others for ten minutes. I only left when I hadn't seen hail for a few minutes. If I didn't live so close I would have stayed longer!
When I got home, I had to handle stopping leaks, clearing gutters, unblocking downpipes and moving chickens under shelter (one of whom I missed). Not fun at all. And the hailstones were more like tennis ball size than golfballs. And they bounced.

One wonders if the steam engines will be allowed at Camberwell once the station is redeveloped. Has anyone known steam engines to stop at Box Hill or any other enclosed/undercover station in Melbourne?
