Well, while concepts may be fun and wonderful to do it turns out my technical/mechanical skills are severely laking so... the pins are immobile (for now! Later I shall return an make them movable) But, until everything's done here's a few pictures of my work.
The basic 'casing' for Maxwell's Automated Lock Disarming Device (henceforth known as MALDD to save me time) it's oak wood, 1/4" thick with a whole drilled straight through the center.
Here's another view of the casing, as you can see there's the hole.
And the pins I'll be using. They're from a package of 25 eye pins and 75 head pins that I found in the bead aisle in my local Wal-Mart (little of everything store)
Finally the pins in place. They'll be held by a two part Epoxy glue and after the glue sets I'll bend both ends to give them the appearance that they are going in on an angle.
While I understand the quality of this project could be a lot higher, I actually wanted to just get it done. However, the second version that I'll be doing in the future after I get some more experience with Steampunk projects I'll put much more time and effort into it.
Also, the wood as been 'burnt' by letting the tip of a flame from a lighter to just barely touch the wood for a few seconds. I decided on that approach to give it a bit more of a used/worn look compared to staining it. Pretty much to me the burn marks look like they could be from grime/dirt from use.
I'll be posting the finished project tomorrow.
Edit: Well, the epoxy worked better than I thought however I realized I was not happy with it at all. I gave it more thought and I realized that over all the entire thing is just too small so it'll be back to the drawing board to make it larger. Also, instead of wood casing it will be metal casing, though the case will end up being hollow.
Edit2: After talking with a friend of mine he exclaimed that it reminded him of something he had found in a game once, and shortly afterwards sent me this screenshot. It's nearly exactly what I had envisioned save for a few changes (wood vs. metal casing) and I'll shortly be trying to figure out how to replicate this unique and fascinating device into reality!
