While wandering aimlessly in a 'Garden Centre, I came across a large acrylic Victorian cloche style propagator, and thought that it would be a terrific start for a Steampunk space helmet, if only I could find a suitable way to mount it to the shoulders; then I found a large polypropylene planter, in a gunmetal finish:
Perhaps attach it to shoulder pads that footballer players wear?

Hahaa. That's just brilliant. What a great find, and a properly sideways mindset to be able to see it's possibilities.
Uplighting of the face, in a mix of blue/green LEDs.

Current plan, after a night cogitating, is to have LEDs to illuminate the interior, round, chrome bezel warning lights on the chest plate, oxygen tanks on the back with soldered copper pipework, and lots of rivets!
Yes, I have to hold my hands up to the Robbie the Robot comparisons, but if your going to steal, steal from the best!

I'd install vents & a CPU fan or you'll be plenty steamy.

That pot just needs painting! Brass or rust would look fantastic Also as other people have mentioned LEDs around the inside edge would be rather fantastic

And don't forget the robotic nose scratcher! Nothing makes one's nose itch more than the simple fact that you can't scratch it.

Personally, if it was me, I'd pop a top hat on the top of that dome. A gentleman shouldn't go about without one, even in oxygen-less environs.

Quick update: Routed out an MDF ring to give it some added strength, and somewhere to latch the cloche onto, you can also see the CPU fan. Here's the fan from the outside, this is on the back of the helmet, so it should be partially hidden by the oxygen cylinders. Also note the brass screws and screw cups holding the MDF ring in place. And here's where I stopped for today, excuse the photoshopping, two lengths of hollow threaded rod are used to hold the cloche on the collar, with two hoop rings, usually found on brass lamps. I'm going to use some foam pipe lagging with a leatherette covering around the edges of the collar, so its a bit more comfortable and will fit more snugly.

WOOHOO!!!!
Excellent progress I must say, Herr Doktor. Can't wait to see the next installment?
Might I suggest pairing it with a heavy canvas one piece suit a la the old diving suits?

Well, even though I had to spring clean the Fortress of Arrogance, I still had some time to spare: Dark brown leatherette added to the bracing ring, threaded tubes with covers. Rivets, and lots of them! Cast in resin and glued on. Cushioned seal, foam pipe lagging with leatherette covering. Need to do bit of work on the brass brackets retaining the cushioned seal, as I cut the lagging a bit too short! Best of all, though is the fact that I can fit my top-hat on underneath it! More later!

For'ard visibility is... within tolerances; but I wouldn't want to walk along a cliff edge! It's a work in progress, much more detail is to be added; dials, pipework, and, of course, MORE RIVETS!
