Now that...... Is a nice bit of work. Not sure if these count as goggles, much less steampunk... But I've been wearing them to various purposes for about 3 years now. My daughter had me make her a pair of round ones for her steampunkish vampire hunter costume. (Image removed from quote.)

Thanks- Glad you like it There's a matching tie, too... Yes- Chainmail tie.... I like Steampunk and Cybergothic, and lean into a bit of Tube Punk. Or as my daughter would say- I dress like a freak.

Well I received my purchase of "Vintage Goggles" from the 'Bay yesterday. Not sure about the vintage so much, but definitely dirty. The set on the left cleaned up nicely, but need new lenses and a new strap (the piece of bicycle innertube didn't cut it ). The ones in the middle could be nice, but one of the lens holders is not original and I think it was glued on. (oh, Piffle) The one on the right is well worn, but may have some potential after a bit o' paint. So I ask, what should I use to replace the strap on the first pair. I think leather would be nice, but would need to be pointed in the right direction to find some thin enough? Thank you.

Nice set you have there! As for your leather, try a glove shop, bead shop, or craft store. Or if you know any hunters... While they may not have any skins around this time of year, they will certainly know of the shops that will buy them.

Just a thought and a question about welding lenses. If you had multiple flip-down lenses, do the welding-protection bonuses stack? For example, is a #3 lens + a #4 lens = a #7 lens? This would be great for having one pair of goggles that functioned as both sunglasses and welding goggles.

I have a pair of Halcyon-a-likes. Very nice, rather comfortable, and the angles make for a fairly unobstructed view. But they don't feel as vintage as they could.

If you scroll up and down the sides you'll see aviator goggles, Atomic Ray goggles, and all the way at the bottom, Industrial goggles. I have a silver/green pair of the atomic ray goggles, they're pretty cheap, the pain started to chip off, I might try to play with them/paint them though. My friend has the Industrial/Iron Cross pair, they're actually pretty nice for plastic goggles, no complaints. http://www.thetreebuilder.com/drpeepersindex.htmlI'm a huge fan of these glasses too, my roommate found them in Colonial Williamsburg I believe. I really want my own pair.

That line almost made me spit my tea all over my keyboard. I just won these on ebay: Not exactly welding goggles but still pretty neat.

Wait a minute... these almost look exactly like the goggles I lost bid-wars on a couple weeks ago, only they had green lenses... *eyes burst into flame* If you're the twatter that stole these sweet goggles out under my, I'll turn my tesla-cannons on you!

Gentlemen, gentlemen! Every pair of goggles has a rightful owner, whether the owner knows it or not. If you don't get a particular pair, it just means it's not the pair for you - you'll find yours eventually. *smiles* It's a bit like a cat in that respect.

There don't seem to be many tutorials mentioned, so I've written my own! http://singularphotography.com/Goggles/I'm planning to do a photoshoot and having trouble sourcing props, so I've started constructing my own - next up I'm planning a keyboard and display (built from scratch, very steam-punk but totally non-functional). Also, my first post, so Hi! Cheers, Tom

Don't know if it was mentioned earlier in this thread but there's a good tutorial on Instructables.com. With that said, though, I like your tutorial a little more! Mainly because it feels a lot more authentic, with actual brass and old leather so on. In my very humble personal opinion, leather straps riveted to the leather eyecups might look cooler, with a small belt buckle to tie it off at the back of the head and make it adjustable. Something about the chain feels a bit dainty, like the eyeglass chain my high school headmistress used to wear for her specs.

I know what you mean about the chain, but that's okay as they are meant for a lady - you could always go for a heavier iron chain to achieve a more gentlemanly look Oh, and I don't recall seeing that tutorial mentioned before - thanks for mentioning it. Cheers, Tom

Thanks! Ideally I'd like the lenses to look like they actually magnify or otherwise distort the light in a useful manner, or at the very least bulge slightly to catch the light just so. I wonder if there's a plastic that's reasonably easy to sand down to a lens shape. Or perhaps I can use the soft lenses you suggest and put them in a form for a while at temperature until they take that shape permanently. Cheers, Tom

Those are nice ones... i didn't have time to check (being at work), but are they original (used for some actual purpose other than fashion)?
