This was my first mod that I attempted after lurking for awhile and reading all your great posts. It started life as a $14.00 CD player.  For the rest of the pictures I will just post clickable links. It is I-Pod convertible, but that just seems wrong somehow (one less spinning shiny thing!!!! A travesty! put the CD back in now!) I was thinking about some ad copy for it......... I could imagine an ipod (or any kind of external contraption) version with the CD player porthole displaying either a spinning cog array or, if you want to dabble into high voltage, a "magical eye" wired to give graphical equalizer output.

Ah...
The closer I look the more awesome it gets. This may take a few days to fully appreciate...
I mean, everything's functional? You're going to have to enumerate each bit, and how they connect - what do the knife switches do? Do the bellows have any connection to the horns? Do both horns work, and is the small one a tweeter? What do the gauges indicate? Does the crank actually power it? Good grief...
I could probably say something snarky about spinning discs and digital music, but you've stunned the snark right out of me.

LOL It's actually a little of both. The hand crank does not actually power the unit. However, I wanted to give the illusion that if you cranked it you were tightening the main spring. So when you crank the handle there is resistance and a rather loud clicking noise. 9 out of 10 people assume they are winding a spring that powers the brass wheel that drives the bellows. In fact, the motor for the wheel is driven by a hidden 9-volt battery. |

Oh good lord jesus, are you sure is your first mod? Its professionally gorgeous. To be honest, I have been a "tinkerer" since I was a child. I took the TV apart and put it back together when I was 9 years old. I have always loved Victorian stuff (as you can tell from the pictures of my living room). So my point is I have been living "Steampunk" for well over a decade. Problem is until about 6 months ago I had never heard the word "Steampunk" or had any idea that there were other people like me out there LOL. I found it was a better idea to stop showing people my inventions because they generally just thought it was weird and didn't understand it. They also thought that I lived in a Victorian decorated apartment with no electric lighting (oil lamps, etc.) to be weird as well (then I bought my house in Florida which is not exactly a mecca for Victorianism). So I guess I went into the "Steampunk" closet. That is why I want to say a humble thank you to you guys for all your positive feedback. I am used to people just squinting at my stuff and muttering under their breath and walking away LOL. It's nice to have folks who "get it." |

I added a link to a You Tube video of the device in action to the end of the original thread post. It may help explain some more about how it works.
BTW - I tried to comment on the You Tube video and put the web address of the site and the posting so people could see the pictures of this and everyone else's wonderful inventions but it wouldn't let me post a comment. Perhaps you can not comment on your own video that you posted (this was my first foray into You Tube posting so I simply don't know). It may be that it just takes a while to show up (anybody know the rules here?)
If it is not a violation of the board's netiquette, it might be nice of someone to post a link back to the site for folks who are curious about Steampunk stuff in the video comments.
