Have you noticed you can't turn around these days without bumping into a new Steampunk band?  Honestly, I think its great, provided we can all get along. We need more, because we need enough to support music festivals, and what not!

Granted, the genre is so new that these bands all have NOTHING in common....except maybe goggles. Hopefully, we can all keep from that old pitfall, "That’s not a REAL Steampunk band". The Goth scene was horrible that way.

The next thing people tend to do is slice the scene up. "We aren't a Goth band, we are a rivet-punk-emo band!" I've seen some Steampunk slicing already, but it’s so unnecessary. Can't we just all admit their will be variations on the theme? 

Whats the point of this rant? I guess it's this: The scene is growing by leaps and bounds. Lets all try to play nicly, so it can me a fun scene to be in!

I think the general concensus here is that there many ways you can punk steam and it can still remain steampunk....errm...not sure if that's the right way to put it, but you get the idea!

Yeah I too have noticed this, and I agree that none of us sound the same. I suppose you've heard the Unextraordinary Gentlemen by now right? I'm a pretty big fan of their stuff, as they share many of my influences.

As you well know I was quite vocal and adamant about what is and isn't Steampunk awhile ago, but I've since then decided to just leave it alone, and let people interpret the style as they see fit.

I know that what I make I consider to be influenced by Steampunk, and that's good enough for me. Actually I've titled my work rather tongue-in cheekily "Steamwave" lol. Which in spite of the silly nature of the term actually fits quite well.

Oh and I forgot to say earlier... welcome to Brass Goggles! This forum rules, I'm sure you'll blow plenty of time perusing its various threads.

The Goth scene really alienated me with all the "THAT'S NOT GOTH!!!!" screaming that went on in the forums.  One of the things that has attracted me to Steampunk, aside from the general aesthetic and inclusiveness of different ideas, is the mannerly way in which everyone behaves under the conditions of anonymity.  I have a rather dated sense of etiquette thanks to my upbringing (much older parents than most), so it makes me happy as hell to be here.

I'm sure it's been said elsewhere, but the best rebellion in this day and age is to be a gentleman.  Or a lady.

As for the Steampunk music genre, I hope it remains chaotic.  Pigeonholes do nothing but stifle creativity and the free-flow of ideas.  And discussion is always better than arguments.

Who but Vernian Process, Abney Park and Unextraordinary Gentlemen call themselves steampunk? Yes, there are many bands that fit the bill for me personally, but i haven't heard anyone else actually use the term.
Come to think of it, UXG hasn't used the term really. They're strictly Victorian synth-punk :p.

I HAD TO FINISH THIS ALBUM!
We had all these old songs with Steampunk theames (clock work boys, steampowered future-cities, etc), and we were getting awfully tired of being "Goth" since we never really were that goth to begin with. And then our plane ran into that airship and killed half their crew and half our band...

Well, it takes me about two years to write an album, so we started telling the world were going Steampunk, and started shooting pictures.  Well, people start yelling at us "Your music doesn't SOUND steampunk, it sounds goth!" Well, duh, I can't right an album in a weekend!

...well, not a good one anyway...

So, I've had to lay low, and stay off the forums while getting this damn thing finished. Its done now, so I can come over here and start bugging you guys.

Now that thats over I have time to start helping people out: Some ex-Abney Parkers are starting a Steampunk project called "The Deadly Nightshade Bontanical Society" and I'm helping a bit with the producing and engineering of that. I'm also helping record an album for Inisaar Jubran, a persian girl who is one of the singers on our latest album. Oh, yeah, and I'm sending some studio gear to Vernian Process, to help him up the par on his future stuff...which remeinds me I got to run to guitar center to get a few things for that.

On the whole, "But that's not steampunk!!!!!!1!2asfhsdf4$sdfflah!" thing (yes, i stole that from Anachronist), a lot of that was going on about 5 months ago, but has mostly died out. Good thing too.

I am glad I arrived fashionably late to the party and missed such a ungentlemanly scene.
While I skirted around the edges of the Goth and Grunge scenes they were never my home, but I was fortunate to have friends all as odd as myself in one way or another.

This thread has however made me aware my SP music collection needs expanding, time to visit Vernian Process' home of ill repute.

I think it would be fun if steampunk music stayed chaotic too; I hope steampunk music will be a bit theater-like when it comes to concerts, sort of dramatic and fun.  I think a good idea for a common sound/thread could be that sort of Indian/middle eastern/morrocan thing, that sort of sound that's in "Stigmata Martyr" and "Sleep Isabella." I love that sound though, so I could be a little biased.

Personally I feel that any kind of world/ethnic music can be used in a Steampunk style. Not just Middle Eastern music  (Which I have also utilized in my work, particularly the song "Mirage" on my Discovery LP, and "Dreams of Persia" on The Forgotten Age).

I had thought of doing an album a few years ago based on "Around the world in 80 days", where each song would progressively change geographic theme. I don't think I am musically knowledgeable enough yet to pull it off though, but its something I plan on doing in the future as I gain experience writing music.

It seems like Lost Horizons has a similar theme which is cool given the bands identity as roving airship pirates.

Actually I have already decided on my next album, and it is going to be songs based on classic poetry from various Supernatural/Horror authors. I plan on doing poems and short tales that aren't amongst those particular authors most known works.

My musical tastes are quite...eclectic to say the least. Whatever fits my fancy at the moment, I guess. Could be heavy metal, punk, jazz, reggae, trad music, whatever. I guess I'm not much of a person who sticks to a certain musical style. I'm certain that people would be quite puzzled if they listened to my iPod on Shuffle! Back to topic, I'd love to see more steampunk (or steamwave in the case of Vernian Process's style) music. The type of music that gets you in the mood for dabbling in mad science or taking off on an adventure in an airship.
