Put in off topic rather than metaphysical because this is less a question about SP irc channles and more about wether there's a channle that the goes along wit hthe forum or not. Postscript: Currently it looks like http://www.ircnet.net/ (use this site to find your local node server) #brassgoggles is the best candidate for all things steampunk.Moderator Postscript: To make this easier, I've moved the channel to DalNet. Simply use your favorite IRC client (or the ChatZilla Firefox plugin) to connect to the server "irc.dal.net" and join the channel #brassgoggles. I have registered it, so that it stays open even if we're all offline. If you can't work an IRC client, the website http://www.dal.net has a web based IRC system. See you there! I have managed to connect to the IRC channel, but there is no-one here as far as I know :S If you use Pidgin messenger: Add a new account (IRC) Username: Set as whatever you want. Server: irc.dal.net
It will long on, then a message window will pop up, simple type: /join #brassgoggles
Wow, many people on channel right now Maybe this channel will grow up... that would be nice. In this case, I will improve SteamBot so we will have channel with auto-op list, takeover protection, etc.. About IRC clients... There are many ways to connect to irc channel. mIRC is the best known with bunch of configuration options and add-ons, good for people that need a lot of options and who like to customize the program. Pidgin (IM client) got build in option to connect to irc... not too much options but very fast and easy to use, same thing with Miranda. Like Major Chase mentioned... FireFox got addon to connect. Opera got built-in irc chat... both are quite basic, but look great. Using IRC from the brower by some java applets is good option only when you want to connect fast to channel (one click on the link) or you need to use it from diffrent PC, where you don't have yours irc client...except that it is not good option. Well.....it is easy download mIRC from www.mirc.comthen in the program fill all the field on startup, then in command line at the bottom type: /server irc.dal.net /nick your_nick_in_here /join #brassgoggles and thats all!

OoOOooh, steampunk IRC! The only problem is that IRC's are often spammed in my experience, or maybe i'm just unlucky...

Now then. Who here knows how to set up an IRC channel with an existing server(undernet? freenode? gammaforce?). I know pretty much all you need to do is log into a server and create a channel and poof its there, but we need someone wit ha reliable Bot that can keep said channel open.

Hmm. Seems simple enough, just finding the people able to babysit the channel full time seems to be the trouble. Pick a server, any server. Create a Channel and find three to six people that can act as ops, or at least idle so the channel stays open along wit ha bot that could serve as random chatter, a quote spouter, or just something to sit there and keep the place open if nobody's about. I cannot leave my IRC client open full time as other people use this computer(and I'm paranoid about others snooping in things that are 'just laying around'.

I would gladly run a bot, but alas, my computers' noise keeps me up, so I must shut them down every night. I am very much in favor of the formation of an IRC channel, however.
Thus, I lend my support if not my hands. My apologies.
Regards, Alexander

My most solemn apologies, i was very hyper at the time and conducting a few instant messangers at the time. i did not mean to offend anyone
and by "young" i should specify that i have very little experience in the wonders of inter-computer relations as i was not a heavy user until recently
apologies,
d

I had a bit of a nose-about online. I tend to be on irc.us.ircnet.net when I'm on IRC. There's a #steampunk full of quiet Finns. What about a #brassgoggles? I'm currently "idling" in both channels for the time being. I'll be off to bed shortly (ah the life of an Antipodean) but feel free to take a sticky beak. Hopefully the connection will remain for most of the night. (For Mac users, I'm using a bit of software called Colloquy (I think that URL is correct)).

i'm unsure on if there's a mac version. but for us windows and linux users Gaim is quite lovely(and open scource to boot).
Postscript: It won't let me connect!

I didn't know GAIM had IRC compatibility, but then I've never really used it all that much. Typically I just use XChat or bitchX on Linux (both of which should theoretically work on Mac OSX also, assuming you have it set up with the Linux compatibility layer

Any derivative of ircnet.net should work. Might need to check the site for your local server.

Thanks much. Updating the first post to link to their homepage(so people can find their local servers) rather than the specific server.

Lovely. I haven't seen anyone yet. I am in there as 'lexiphanic' (or a derivative thereof, like 'lexiphanicsleep'). If you pop in, leave a message and say hi.
EDIT: I stand corrected. I just spotted Lazaras making an appearance, though he's yet to say a word.

Trying to make the most of the quiet I have at the moment so a bit scattered about. Sorry. Between my machine having a bad morning, and other bits and pieces of things in my head I'm more than a tad scatterbrained.
As a note to anyone who wishes to log in I've been experiancign a rather lengthy wait to connect, but it will eventually connect so please be patiant if its taking awhile.

An excellent plan. However, it seems somewhat silent at the moment, surely a temporary issue.
I use the old stalwart, mIRC.

Well currently I'm in there. However the servers may be split so I dunno. I don't know how talkative I'll be as I'm multitasking, but I'm there.

Well I'm reviving this idea whether anybody wants me to or not I won't be placing a bot on the channel, but I'll hang out in #brassgoggles on IRCNet for now. Any thoughts for/against a move to DalNet though?
