Wow, it's been a while since I last visited this forum. I used to frequent here under the name "Wrath The Mad", but for some reason I'm unable to log in or recover my password. Eh, may as well go by my SL name now. Having a blast in Caledon Middlesea, one of the 49 regions that comprise the nation of Caledon. I've met lots of awesome folks, built aircraft, airships, and a floating skybase as well as many other odd and random things. Pic of the airbase "Iron Cloud" with a few of my craft in the spoiler. ^^ I'm currently involved in the SL-RFL, American Cancer Society's virtual Relay For Life that actually manages to raise real money for a real cause, inside a virtual world! So far for this year we've raised L$54,360,165 which through the Linden Exchange equates to about $225,000 usd. The L$/usd exchange goes both ways. Think of L$ as chips in a casino. You can spend them, earn them, buy them in whatever your local RL currency is, or cash them out. There are folks that make a living creating and selling items in SL. Though they are few. SL can be described as a chat client with physics, a build system, and commerce. It's not a 'game' in the sense that there is no end goal but what you set for yourself. There are games within it, sure. Combat regions, shopping, events... It blows "Sims" right out of the water as far as interactivity goes. (No offense to fans of "Sims", but can you build anything like what's in that picture above? Can you fly it when it's built? Sell it to someone?). You can even see it as a sort of prototype developer. Fashion designers are testing designs in SL. Companies are doing training and product demos in-world. I'm helping to build a virtual campus for USA Education - South Alabama University Online Learning Lab. The possibilities are abundant. The potential is limitless. I warn you, it IS addictive. But there are several very good reasons why. ^^

Well, I took the plunge and joined. Newton Deed is the name. That's a picture of me with my Mk II airship parked outside the library behind me. Mk III will likely have some really neat add-ons like a spinning propeller.

I've been knocking about SL for a couple of years now. I primarily used it as a building platform for modelling 3d theatres and sets etc. under the name Simpson Vendetta.
I've been to New babbage a few times, and had a wander through Caledon.
I also adminster Loughborough university presence in SL. There isn't much on our island as yet, one of the theatres that I re-created, and one of the engineering buildings that an engineering PHD student is modelling. I used SL in my masters thesis. Arguing that online immersive worlds like SL (and other MMORPGs) are the logical progression of the modernist (and by extension Bauhaus) movement. I'm still not sure about it myself, but my supervisor seemed happy with it as he gave me a 1st for it.

I joined SL just today in order to take a look at some of the interesting worlds and such. I have to say that New Babbage and Caledon are both very intriguing, and wandering around aimlessly can be fun. But I honestly don't understand the game at all. x_x;; Wandering gets tedious after a little while, simple things like changing clothes are impossible to figure out, and I'm starting to wonder exactly what people find so addicting about this game. It's fun to look at, sure, but that's about it. Or am I missing something? Ah well. I might try it again sometime. My SL name is Zel Macarthur if anyone wanted to know.

It isn't a game. Understanding that is the first step to understanding SL.

Signed up last night as Milburn Renobaum, got myself blown up twice because I jumped into a shiny plane owned by someone else :-p Going to look into this modeling thing and making things. Looks like I may be able to export from blender which if this is the case I shall be turning out steamy artifacts fairly regularly hopefully.
Though I must say I poped about in Caledon last night and this morning and it seemed fairly empty. :-p

Lucky for me I successfully managed to land myself with exactly the last name I wanted. As a result, I am Caspar Byron. Haven't been on SL for a little while, but I'm hoping to drop by again soon. =]

I joined up last night, I'm known as Henage MacIntyre. I'm still in the help area, I was only in-world for about 10 minutes but I hope to be there again on the week-end.

You'll find me in there occasionally in Caledon - as Cubinoid Loxtonian. I'll be the one chatting to Prof Ravelli Ormstein most likely, or flying the airship around. Don't accept my offer for a ride in the catamaran - I'm a hopeless driver on sea.
