Doktor... Will this piece be on display at the UK show we are involved in? It will be most excellent to see it up close and personal!

I seem to recall that there was a 'No Weapons' "rule" when the details of this event were first revealed, hang on, I'll have a look...

...Ah, here it is:

*No Guns, Weapons, Costume/Clothing or Decorative Jewelry (sorry).
*Only 3D art-  Looking for Sculptural devices (working or non working) .
*You may submit up to 6 (six) small Jpegs with a brief text description. No vids.
*Art must be complete and finished (no concept sketches or prototypes accepted) and must be your own original work.
*Finished pieces may not be larger than 2' x2' x2'...

So, no, I'm afraid not.

A Steampunk exhibition with no guns?  Shocked

Oh well, it might help break the stereotype I suppose. Be nice to get away from air pirates!

Perhaps a US of A steampunk exhibition can be organised with a section for gunsmiths...

T'would be the same here in the Antipodes - the country is gun shy therefore such things cannot be displayed easily (or even legally).

While waiting for parts for another project, I've taken the time to replace the (rather cheap and nasty) self-adhesive baise with some black velvet:

You can see the effect better here:

Stuck down with contact adhesive, and folded under the cutouts, it's given a much better, more 'luxurious' feel to the box- I also burnt off the loose strands of material with a small blow torch, which has singed the fabric in a way that gives it a nicly browned, aged look in places.

Smiley

PS: If maduncle hadn't said pages back about using real velvet, I might have left it as it was, so thanks!

My goodness. Herr Döktor, I just choked on my hot cocoa and I had to clean a lot of it off of my typographical-communication-device!
That looks astoundingly impressive (the steam pistol)! Its incredibly beautiful, incredibly! Well done sir, well done! Grin

The new velvet looks a treat H.D. - good colour choice.

Are you planning to finish the tool holder section in the same finish as the gun? I think that would tie it in rather well.

I am continuing to use velvet to line my boxes, I use a card panel as the backing, first cover it in a 5mm thick layer of padding to give the velvet an upholstered look, and then cover the panel in velvet by taking the material over the edge and fixing it on the back with very strong double sided tape. The box I have upholstered to house the inspectacles for the exhibition in Oxford has been done this way, complete with upholstery studs to get that 'chesterfield look' inside the lid.

I love the ides of the scorching, that would give the velvet the old worn look.

And that gun metal finish is STILL the best paint finish I have seen on a prop gun.

Cheers,

And another thing...

... any plans for the lid of the box?

Velvet panel?

Operating instructions stuck to the lid in old browned faded paper? (Writing operating instructions is fun!).

I managed a big push on this project for the ASYLUM, and had it done for last weekend's festivities, so, without further ado, FINISHED* PICTURES:

In it's velvet lined case, with maker's label.

Assembled, with water and sulphuric acid bottles, along with boxes of ammunition.

Glass funnels with brass holder, used for charging the tanks, don't mix them up, it would be DISASTEROUS.

Close-up of the ammunition boxes.

And finally, the Makers label:

*I say finished, but I still want to do the full instruction manual...

The Contraptor's caveat: 'Nothing is ever truly finished'...

I'm a terrible noob here; might I ask what you mean by "the asylum"?  I take it you don't mean the makers of "Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus" and "Snakes on a Train"?

That said, this piece is absolutely superb.  It's the attention to the small details which really puts it over the top.  A lot of fun to look at; it must have been a lot of fun to make.

I think he does this for a living.

*turns green*

Also, I hate to find fault, but--on the maker's mark--is "warranty" spelled "warrenty"? I really hope I'm wrong...or that that's an obscure but valid spelling...

As always, Herr Doktor, interesting to see a finished production from your hands Smiley

I am curious...how did you obtain such a nice pen drawing of the finished pistol? Is it an actual drawing or clever photo editting?
