In fact, Can I have about twenty of them, ready for my Pirates show in spring next year.

Just lovely.
I think your final colour choice will make or break this one, any ideas yet on final finish?
How about a deep shiny metallic blue/green to contrast with the brass trim - do they do that in Rub 'n Buff?
And I too am experiancing some ungentlemanly thoughts when I imagine wielding this wicked weapon (or any other weapon for that matter).

Why, thank you! And I think I've found a finish- I read, somewhere, that Halfords zinc primer can be wire-wooled and polished to a pewter like sheen, so I've tried it on a swatch: primed, then the zinc primer, left to cure, scotchbrite to break the surface, Autosol to get the shine, then grate-black polish to finish: Excuse the slight lack of focus, and the scratches- both are down to my impatience! The shine is very deep, if you put your finger against it, you get a good reflection, so this is how I'm going to procede!

Looks like a good technique there - be sure to photograph the stages of the paint and finish application for us to all go 'ooooooh' and aaaaah' (and 'uh oh') over.

I've pretty much used up a 300ml rattlecan of the zinc primer, giving three good coats to all the parts, just got to leave it overnight to harden, then I'll start the polishing- I'll take a 'before' picture, it looks like dark grey primer till you knock the surface back, so the difference is quite noticeable...

That sounds like a most interesting prospect. Always good to know these little tricks of the trade.
I assume that all the twiddly bits will be detailed with your usual aplomb, panache, je ne sais quoi and stuff.

Right, been in the workshop since half past six up to eleven, with only a half hour break for supper; so, here's what I've been up to: this is what the zinc primer looks like when first applied: And after a darn good polishing with silver polish: I came to the conclusion that silver polish was best after trying brass and copper polish, T-cut and Brasso- the silver polish was the last that I tried, and it worked the best! And now, with the final polish done with grate black, and assembled: It's not very easy to photograph, ie to pick up how good the metallic sheen is, but this is the best I can manage, I think it would be better under daylight. I still need to do some of the details; the two spigots for the H20 and H2SO4 need to be painted, I was thinking red for the sulphuric acid and blue for the water, and I want to polish up the brass tubes, then of course there's the decals for the water and acid tanks, and the labels for the projectile selector, and I still need to finish the pressure gauge... The mags aren't attached as I'm waiting for the various layers of paint and polish to fully cure before I snap them in!

Magnificant!
That primer paint and polish look certainly worked.
Please remind me what 'grate black' is so I can source some, I like the way it gets in the cracks and around the studs.
A fitting companion to wall mount with your blunderbuss.
Now what are you going to do next???

Black grate polish- the old fasioned stuff that grand mama used to make the fire basket look nice and shiny! You need to find the spirit based stuff, as recently the classic polish by Zebo has been replaced with a water based version, no where near as good! I'm really pleased at the polished zinc effect, I expect everything I make will have this finish for a while! As for what's next: hmm... I've still got to find a use for that horn gramophone...

Please have a go at making your own weapon that captures your ideas and your aesthetic. I too am in awe of many of the good doctors technical skills, but at the same time I use that awe as inspiration to try my hand at something, rather than as a yardstick I cannot measure up to. But I cannot speak for HD who may welcome the work of course - particularly if asked sweetly by a fine young lady. Nevertheless - I would encourage you to use this forum to discuss your weapon design ideas, post pictures of parts, seek advice on assembly and finish and ultimately wield your own weapon with pride (and a gleeful green eyed glint).

*giggles* I must confess, every time I use my hair dryer, I pose with it link a gun, its the perfect shape. I have never made a fictional fire arm before though, they have always been based on a historical blueprint. And have just been stage weapons, the rule of thumb being "if the front row can't tell its a hair dryer, you're ok".....
