Between Approximately 1864 and 1865  the Confederacy was presented with plans for a steam powered airship
by Dentist and Inventor Finely Hunt - he was a dentist by day and engineer/ inventor by night

Below is a model of his original DaVinci-esq design - unfortunately none of these "screw driven" flying machines ever worked



Persoanlly I would have preferred a fleet of these

Imagine their surprise when during the bidding process, the dentist finds he's competing against Austrian designed stratisphere-hugging rigid airships. And the reaction of the military commanders when faced with such choice... Oh, how cruel the reaction would have seemed to the poor dentist inventor!
