Hey folks,

So I put this in metaphysical because I just came up with the thought and don't have any drawings, let alone a working model for it, but I thought it was neat.

Basically my idea was for a way to move around a house/laboratory/warehouse, really any building of substantial size and prper layout.  That would be a great big arm similar to the boom of a cherry-picker, located in the center of a large, centrally oriented room, that a mad steampunk could direct to go to any number of landings on various floors of the building.  Anyway, I thought you guys might find it a neat thought.

I really can't remember which one it was, but there was a movie with just that idea. It must've been 10 years or longer since I saw it, so I have no idea what movie it was. I believe it was something with cars or some such thing.. Or some sci-fi movie..

LOL, I have this mental picture of a Hollywood Squares like layout  of open rooms with an 'elevator' that can move vertically and horizontally.

What about Willy Wonka's wonkavator? Sort of the same idea...except without the arm, and on a factory scale...

Just thinking aloud here..

To actually implement the idea, I think you'd run into difficulties.. for an arm to be able to support that kind of weight, it would need to be quite sturdy (read: large and heavy). It would probably also be powered by hydraulics, which means you'd need a noisy diesel engine, and all the hydraulics equipment (read: heavy, expensive, relatively complicated).. unless of course you can invent a way of properly powering it using steam.. Just get hold of one of these, built a suitable end platform (instead of seats) and bingo!

Sounds like a steampunk version of those ladders that slide along the shelves in really posh private libraries.  Smiley

It reminds me of an anime called Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise. The chief rocket scientist had one.

"Boy, I was flyin' rockets before you were even an itch in yer daddy's crotch!" - Best grumpyoldman line ever.

Beautifully animated, and very steampunk/dieselpunk. Nixie status displays for the rocket and mechanical supercomputers ahoy!
