I made a bearing assembly to be able to use a normal motor instead of clamping on a drill to one of those small woodlathe accessories, and wanted to try it out, as the new shaft seemed a bit long and perhaps might wobble*.
                                                                                                                                                                       (* oh yes... )
Anyway, I cut a square of wood and tried to make a nice turned disk on an untried lathe that I hadn't used for ages.
That was interesting...

From the mouth of almost certain doom, at least for the wood came forth this:-

I have an idea. I wonder how it will work?
I'll post more WIP and see how this pans out.

*edit* Had at it with a rotary rasp, to rough it up a bit (more) and continue the grooves through the flats...

You might have better luck starting with a rough-cut wooden circle.

I know...  Cool goggles on and charge!  I did say it was a while since I had tried any woodturning- the drill wore out...
I was thinking this very thing under a shower of woodchips this very pm.

*****Bohemian bit, here ****Anythway, my new idea was that- as we do make things out of others scrap- should we not have another look at what we consider scrap? ****

So, back to the plot; now instead of a nice turned disk, I have - not a ruined piece, but a raw weathered thing of the same type.

Happily, I fork, off down this new diversion. (careful now...)

Some woodstain:-

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
darker, then

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
lighter in the crevices.

I saw a rocky texture, which, again has turned out like an old wood thing in my hands, but yet has its own interest.

More once the stain has dried!

Curses!!
(The melodrama continues...)

No more pictures yet!

O Why can't things be of the same dimensions as hole drilling tools! The world is full of wrong sized things!

Mutter! *mutter* *mumble* *grouse* Mutter!

Tune in later for more muttering!

Aha! A delivery of spiky Chinese steel has been made. Soon holes shall be mine...
I shall practice a bit with this evil looking hole-saw set first, though.

It looks like a Kraken's tonsils.  Shocked

Hopefully the right sizes will be included- I imagine these things will cut a bit oversize.

Hence the name- I still need to make a sign. Hmmm...

Progress, of sorts:-

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Sadly, the Forstner bit didn't want to cut down the whole diameter, so many concentric cuts needed to reduce the load.
Eventually...

Next; feet, methinks.

I came across a necklace in a charity shop and thought they would do for my space ships interior lamps.
Imagine my surprise when, low and behold, they are feet as well.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I've put a orange flickering LED (4 from Poundland.) for the gas lamp effect. I know they won't work in space but my little Victorian gent will find out the hard way

I'm intrigued to see the end result with the adaptable feet, lampshade, necklace.

You're curious?

I can just make out the path ahead... but there seems to be steam.  Wink

The steam was not steam, but smoke from my headscratching; where was I going with this?
What could I put in the middle?

I was measuring random things for related projects, when I discovered that this-

seen alive here-

Fit perfectly into the previous hole- voila!

Now the steam was bubbling!

I cast my eye about the bench, covering it in sawdust.

I saw the thing, a random jar and-

And in the dark...
