Am I the only one who experienced a site outage yesterday (Aug 12)?

Thank you, I had mislaid that URL.

I was surprised to not see anything on Twitter.

Yeah it was out for me too. I did go to spare goggles, but I forgot my new password, and there are issues with getting it reset (my email address also has a changed password after it was hacked....). Roll Eyes

Well, at least we are back up and running.

Outage my end was nearly 2 days.
I wasn't online after 8am yesterday morning (UK time) so don't know when it finally came back.

I did post in Spare Goggles which is usually the way I check whether it's a general problem or just mine.
As I saw others posting there I knew it wasn't just me.

The advantage to the outage was the Spammers couldn't get on either. Smiley

Short version: there was a small error, which became a large error because my tool to detect errors didn't work right.

Longer version: there was a need for our provider to restart the SAN. The watchdog reported a 2 minute outage, and then full service restoration. Unfortunately, it seems our network configuration was damaged—the watchdog could see it, as could some users (including me), but most users probably could not.

I opened a ticket with the provider as soon as I found this out, and we have a temporary network configuration that should admit most users. There may be intermittent issues as they work out the full solution.

I just found out right now that BG is up.

At sparegoggles.forumotion.net I had made the suggestion of creating a moderators' section with a "war room" thread, so moderators can hash out things and get in contact with one another during these events.  Ms.  Gaslight replied that she could probably make a moderators' section...

This last one kind of scared me for some reason. Thanks for your all's hard work bringing the site back up!

Yup, that sounds like a good idea - the mods should have some sort of communication with each other for outages etc. We should also sort out how we can contact Proteus more efficiently - I think I may be the only one who has any contact at present (?).

Well, you're the only one who can contact Proteus without having to break out a Ouija board

Ouija boards are not nood. You should consult the Necronomicon and wait for the stars in the sky to be in the right position.

Pfft, wait for the stars to align? Just use this here artifact and forcefully align the stars to your choice of position. Probably won't tear spacetime...buy today!

I was thinking about a 'war room' when the first outage happened, good to see others have made the point for me

BG has been offline for me for a few days.

BTW, I eventually remembered 'Spare Goggles', and went a-googling... apparently the first link now leaps to a malware/pr0n-site

It was:  sparegoggles. forumotion. net   (hopefully not a live link)

Maybe the Mods should get Knurd to pass messages via the Aether to Proteus?

The sparegoggles.forumotion.net URL does not redirect me to a porn site or anything else...
That sounds to me like URL-redirect malware installed on Mr.  Strange's computer!  Run a diagnostic!

I worry that this forum, and all of the fascinating information compiled therein, will be lost some day.

I've recently been getting into data-hoarding and web archiving - perhaps I should make this forum my next archive project. Just need a proper NAS setup...
