Maybe it appearing empty is just an illusion, and anyone unwise enough to reach inside finds it's actually the portal to a particularly unpleasant dimension full of tentacles, claws and teeth...

It seems like it used to contain the dreaded Orb of Behara that contains sand from the lost African city of Kehim.

I thought it more likely contained, two used AA batteries, some Freedent, a Kirby Grip, some keys that fit nothing and a couple of receipts.
At least that"s what mine contains  Wink

Are you quite sure? Some of these *things* are quite adept at seeming to be what they are not.

Those Phillips-head screws holding the hinges down would date the box to post-1935 - more likely, post-WWII. Of course they could have replaced older screws ..... but, any self-respecting traditional artisan would have recessed the hinges on both components, not just the lid, so it's probably modern. Also, it's too pristine; an old box would be somewhat more distressed, I imagine. Quite nicely made, though.

Jack in a box (that'll teach people for opening a warded container.).

Maybe it fires something (or several) fuzzy with "tendrils" at the opener. You'd be amazed how good the imagination is at filling in the blanks when something fur covered is moving fast through your peripheral vision or the "sock-rat effect" as it's scientifically known.

Now that has given me another idea...  Grin

The possibilities are almost endless with such a lovely old box.

Since slotted screws have become such a pain to find, I've taken to using small nails to hold my hardware on.

Sounds painful!

I've been keeping an eye (heh) on the Bay of E for tiny brass slotted screws, but they are getting hard to find, probably as they have the word 'brass', and so are a target for Jawas and other profiteers. If you get stuck, drop me a line, and I'll see if I can help.

I don't think the box is very old - It's hard to say, as it's from a charity shop - but I've seen similar available from China for reasonable sums.

Well, I'm stuck waiting for supplies for a bit, so I'll pop in a quick WIP pic or two...

Tada!

Yes, it's the other eye!  ( Sorry to disappoint everyone, but you have given me some good ideas...   Cheesy  )

This needs a lot of work yet, not least because of the fairly garish colours!
And a back story...

More to follow!

Hum.  Don't ask me for technical details, but it seems feasible that there could be some linkage with an 'eyelid', such that upon opening the lid one saw the Eye also opening ...

Don't eat the rune prunes.
They will give you a malady you can't pronounce!
