After a horrible few weeks, with bereavement and the sad job of clearing mother-in-laws flat and sorting out the many different bits of paperwork, it is good to be back here.

First week at work down. Holy SH*T. Been a wild ride, but good pay. First check is Thursday, will be short than the regular will be because it's the FIRST check, but is enough to cover our bills for the half month.

New cousin born 27th Dec - little boy called Eric!

Congratulations, Xenos!

Commiserations and sympathy Ms Courcelle. A tough time and a tough job, made a little worse, I would suppose, by the time of year.

Almost missed Christmas, but after three years of struggling, I was diagnosed with chronic asthma! I am overjoyed, as now I can do something to vastly improve the uptake of oxygen! (And I can stay alive and stuff...) Getting better already.

Thank you Banfili.  We are looking forward now and hopefully 2018 will be a good year for us all.

Great news Synistor - not that you've got asthma, but that now it's diagnosed you can be treated.  Continued breathing is such a good idea.

Found the problem in my oldest Tesla Coil:
(the one I built as a student)
Electrical problems sometimes have purely mechanical causes.
It was a loose screw. The one that clamps the wire to the HV capacitor bank terminal block.
This coil is limited to about 10cms of spark length.
So I can use it for demonstration purposes:

Fired up:

target electrode approaching from top left:

First strike into target:

Continuous arcs to target:

Happy to have it working properly again.

Last night at my Model Rail club we had an unexpected (well to me at least) visit from a local guy looking to get rid of a load of his/his late father's model rail stuff due to a house move, and after a good rummage through the boxes, this was my haul:

All for nothing  Grin

There was quite a bit of stuff we advised him to hang onto and get in touch with a specialist auctioneer to sell, but most of the stuff people laid claim to was like the above (kit and scratchbuilding supplies which would too much trouble to actually be worth him selling).

Well done, madas!
Had a lovely visit from my friend two or three valleys over - sort of a late birthday/Christmas/New Year catch up.
And my little black rescue cat and I had a smooge session with MEGA HUGE purrs - a real breakthrough moment!!  Grin Grin

Today on my journey I visited Bromaseltzer Arts Tower and rode the antique elevator up to the top and climbed into check out the interior of the Giant clock in the tower.

But before we did that I got an unofficial behind the scenes look at the street car museum (forgot my camera for that one though, and only managed one pic with my phone, so I made it my favorite thing there).

After that I went to Two art museums.

It's been an interesting day.

rovingjack, I have a hidden object computer game "Amazing Adventures: Riddle of the Two Knights" which uses a picture of that clock tower as one of their hidden object backgrounds! Of course, the game is based in Europe and the Middle East, so the picture is out of context, but I did wonder where it came from. I wonder where a lot of the backgrounds come from, to be honest!

Colombian university students fight sexism with mini skirts  Cheesy

If it seems oxymoronic, it's because the local university had issued a recommendation for female students not to wear mini skirts so as not to distract male students. Considering the bulletin sexist, the students organized a mini skirt day...

An online campaign read: "Whether or not you are distracted does not depend on my skirt. Tomorrow, everyone wears skirts"

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-42996996

The university had received heavy criticism in previous years for offering seemingly sexist courses. In particular "good manners" summer classes for 10 year old girls. The class was titled "Girl Things."

Finally finished 20 smocks plus one more for a grandchild at school and a bag for the smocks to go in when they are taken home to be washed. I am one very happy stitcher! One of the Kindergarten teachers wanted me to make her a smock... (Not enough wine for me me to do that...)

I took my kids to see The Dark Crystal on the big screen today. It is one of my favorite movies from my childhood, and yes, it is still awesome.. It turns out that there will be a screening of Labyrinth at the end of April - I'm going to do my best to get us to that as well, because while I own The Dark Crystal on dvd, my kids have yet to see Labyrinth.
