I'll be interested to find out how you are going to make the artificial mushrooms / fungi.

Didn't someone make a top hat on here that was cut away and had plants growing in it?
Good shout. I'll keep an eye out for that. Thanks.

Artificial? I grow mushrooms for a living, why do I need artificial ones?

Real mushrooms could damage the hat fabric.
Overheated convention centres could badly wilt them.
Because you really wouldn't want cloth flavoured mushrooms.

I'm not gonna eat the one's that have been on my clothes, and I know how to look after them so they won't wilt. Essentially I'll make sure the clothes can't be colonised, and simply grow them from compartments.

While i love the idea of life plants in costuming(that's really cool you know), i'm not sure if using them for a costume is a very good idea. The fungi will damage your clothing and the wearing of your clothing will damage the fungi...
I don't know where you want to be wearing the costume but indoors events tend to be hot and crowdy... not ideal circumstances for growing plants/fungi.
I think it'll be better to use artificial ones...

I love the idea of having fungi all over the place.  I'm just wondering how heavy a glass jar with compost and fungi would be.

It'll be small vials of sawdust with fungi. Surprisingly light-weight.

How about orange tree mushrooms growing up one of your gaiters?  Be a great pop of color, and you could start with just a little bit and add more over time, as your persona ages.  Let you change your costume in subtle ways for every event.

This google image search shows many different kinds.   http://tinyurl.com/z38k2e2

Some could be made of fabric or sheet craft foam to be lightweight and resilient.

http://tinyurl.com/jxxagou is a search for "tree fungus" to show more shapes and colors.

something between a grenade vest and a Cossack coat? also perhaps a lantern to hunt those dark places and at night, to protect any valuable finds?
