Twine is a bit of software that helps you make a branching story and is an outgrowth of tiddlywiki in that it outputs to a single HTML file and is highly customizeable through CSS. Unlike Tiddlywiki it comes with software (windows, mac, linux, web based) that does all the mapping out for you so you can see what connects where. This is very useful when you have a lot of branches, especially when a late branch connects to an earlier branch that has conditional flags that only trip after other conditions are met.

You can do things as simple as hypertext stories, to something as complicated as real time stat based RPG with inventory, random encounters, npcs, and such.

It has several design languages for internal workings so you can find a format that works for you, and if you're able to CSS you can design your own.

I'm currently in the middle of planning a project that uses this (mostly due to not having the ability to make something in RPG maker that won't look super generic.

Youtube User Vegetarian Zombie is in the process of making a series of videos that both introduces Twine and goes into the how of one of its languages (Sugercube.). Even though the twine introduction videos are for an older version it is still highly useful to help see if it is something you want to look at.

Did I mention it outputs to HTML? As in you have your HTML, any support things (like graphics, sounds, fonts, etc) in a folder, and then you open a browser, or you could put it all in an archive that an exe/exicuteable/app reads as a standalone game, and it's all open source, free to use, free to make commercial products out of. These people are very spiffy.

I'd say more accessible. Inform and other parser based things I still feel very much deserve a place in the gaming ecosystem but... this is a lot simpler to get into both writing and playing.

I sent a demo sample to a friend who had a member of her family test it and he enjoyed it.
Twine worked simply for those who have never played.

Still got two manuscripts to edit and 3 to write to finish one series then there are over 12 more stories waiting to be written!
