Fabricator and temporally confused.

I had at first assumed that the number of gears corresponded perhaps to number of posts.  This seemed a reasonable hypothesis since, if I recall correctly, I started with one and now I have two, and I saw some moderators who had many.

But now I see this simply isn't so.  May I ask, what is the significance of the number of little gears in people's headers?  And why are some of them red, some orange, and some yellow?

I think there's a FAQ for this, but I can't remember where it is. Roll Eyes

Ranks on Brass Goggles are (usually) based on time online, rather than post count. (I say "usually" because every so often the plugin responsible gets knocked over and we go back to post-count for a while.)

We've done it this way to encourage people to read more than they post, and so that "post whoring" (posting for the sake of getting your numbers up) is not rewarded; this helps to reduce the noise level on BG.

The number of red or brass gears corresponds to rank (Swab, Gunner, Admiral &c.), and the colour simply indicates whether you're in the "lower" or "upper" ranks. Yellow gears represent administrative rank (Moderator, Board Moderator, Admin, Governor &c.)

And unless I'm remembering wrong, we aren't supposed to tell you how much time you need for each rank. Smiley

Well found! And yes, we don't talk about how many minutes or posts (depending which is active) are needed. Or the secret upper ranks that nobody's reached yet! Wink

I can say I was surprised by how fast I went up in rank, though

Your first couple are, but the progress slightly exponentially. It's only a few hours or posts to get "on the rungs" as a deck hand, then from there is gets MUCH harder. You'll hang at Immortal for... well.... ever Wink
