You forgot the bit about "discovering the color brown"  Grin

Of course, one look at the Steampunk scenes in countries which are newer to Steampunk, such as Japan and Mexico, will reveal that the crowd tend to range between the teens and the early 20s in age....

Twenty-year-old old Goths?

While an argument can certainly be made that the Steampunk subculture grew out of the Goth subculture, it scarcely seems to be the mass shift of old people that the comment rather snippily implies.

I'm 20 and have never been a goth.

and according to my friend (who is a goth) there is a subgenre/subsubculture called Steamgoth. because crossovers are fun.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
it can't be denied there are parallels (top hats and dark colours sometimes combined with macabre imges), but there's difference too...

and THIS is what happens when goths meet steampunk:

Sorry, I don't see how this statement (apart from being a crass generalisation) cheapens either Goth or Steampunk.

Sounds like another pigeon hole person to me.

Pigeon hole people lead pigeon hole lives.
with pigeon hole status in pigeon hole size.
Fit it into boxes all simple and neat.
to stand in a row with their pigeon hole feet.

For life is so simple no if and no but
sceptic explanation; then look at them strut...

-----------------
Anyway Goths? Can't stand em; moping around the place. Always dressing in black like they're one step away from a funeral;

Oh, hang on a sec........ I may not have thought that through.

I've never been a Goth.

Me neither, although in my late teens and early twenties (a long time ago) my wardrobe consisted almost entirely of black, as did that of many of my friends; but we definitely weren't goths -  we were quite happy most of the time too (except when being oppressed by an older generation who just didn't understand us).

I've never been a Goth.

Glad I'm not the only one, (and just for the record, I never had a 'Smith's phase' either).

Although as my local group say; "Everyone comes to Steampunk in the end", just because we all know people in the Steampunk community we've met previously through goth, reenactment, LARP et al.

Been in the anime fandom for a while, that was my stepping stone but that never really fitted me. Been looking at steampunk in awe from the very beginning.

I read this one a few years ago, in one of our previous Goth/Steampunk threads:

"The main difference between Goth and Steampunk is that Steampunks can smile without breaking character."

Do Goths wear latex and PVC? I thought that was the pseudo-SM crowd........ you know, the cheapo ones who can't afford real leather.....

I just find the statement to be completely useless if true or not.
Best case scenario. You have discovered a massive conspiracy where by older people who have realised they look bad in young peoples cloths shift a little into more timeless attire.

Surely this is a good thing? More dapper people walking around. Less fashion atrocities? More tweed? Less spandex?

As a cutting statement of hidden truth, It's just a little lazy to be perfectly honest C-, could do better.

Here's another one: "Some dead quadrupeds are just alive dogs that have died."

Well get thee to baker street Sherlock.....
