This 1973 made-for-television musical version of the tale features songs by Lionel Bart (Oliver!) and stars Kirk Douglas in the dual role.

The transfer quality of this shot-on-tape film isn't all that great, but I've never found a better copy (and, to my knowledge, it isn't available on DVD or VHS).

In ten "parts".

(A brief bit of blank space at the front of this part.)

(There's a blank space from about 00:06 to approximately 01:39.)

(The film concludes at about 03:10, so you can ignore the blank space after that and go on about your business.)

So, should this musical have been better received than it was, or does it deserve its obscurity?

I recall watching it back when it aired and having one song painfully stuck in my head, which went something like:
Kirk:  "I bought a bicycle...."
Woman: "You bought a bicycle?"
"A bicycle."
"A bicycle....la la la la laaa."

Make of that what you will.

"I bought me a bloomin' bicycle!"
"Henry!"
"Sorry."

Yeah, that's the one that stuck with me, too...

It's also on YouTube in it's entirety with a better transfer but it has an annoying 'Public Domain D-Bags' voice over in the style of 'Mystery Science Theater 3000'.

The original VHS is scarce but does occasionally turn up on eBay and iOffer

Yeah, I had a quick look at that one and chose the other "version" because the "D-Bags" were, as you pointed out, more annoying than  it was worth. I couldn't even get past the introduction. Joel and Mike and the 'Bots they ain't.

And thanks for the note about there actually being a VHS out there; I assumed someone had just recorded the show from the original broadcast (ah, remember the days when, if you wanted to download a song you waited for it to play on the radio and held your tape recorder up to the speakers?).
