Name : Jaisen Santiago Dreyfuss (prefers just “Dreyfuss”)
Age : 40
Nationality
(place of birth) : Province of Tejas, New Spain (Now the Republic of Texas)
Physical appearance : 5' 11" medium build, rangy, early stages of middle-age fat, but still relatively lean. Habitually wears either brocade- or leather-fronted black, blue, or brown waistcoats/vests over Marauder standard-issue mailshirt with center-placket broadcloth shirts and cravat, black stripe-legged (buff stripe) bib front trousers with the leather suspenders under the waistcoat, leg cuffs tucked into  knee-high, deerskin-and-black-cowhide, buckle-and-lace, heeled moccasin boots (look like Navajo-pattern boot mocs, only higher).

Is never without his "possibles" bag, hung from left shoulder to right hip, which contains the military-standard quickstart firekit; powder and shot for the blunderbuss (actually a modified "boat gun") in inner sleeves of the body of the bag; small tin flask usually containing some variety of extremely strong liquor, journal with charcoal and graphite sticks; small short-handle hammer; roll of bone and steel needles, thread and sinew, and small leaf-bladed knife for clothing repair; his old fife from his early Texas Army days; occasionally used to carry food items (for trips on foot, for instance).

On right shoulder to left hip is slung a flattened-gourd water bottle, covered in brown leather and stoppered with willow tied on stopper. Usually carries the blunderbuss slung over one shoulder or other; habitually wears Paterson revolver (modified to .44 caliber, with detachable cylinder for ease of reloading in battle) on hip rig on right leg; "bowie" knife hangs next to holster on same belt. basket saber hangs at left side, held in place by trouser-hook on scabbard. frequently carries crook-ended hickory cane, stuck fast under the left suspender, and limps from the left hip, knee, and foot, although he tries to hide it. Dreyfuss hates canes, but is often forced by necessity to use one when he's not in combat or in a forest of airship cables.

Profession / job title
: Former mercenary Airship Captain/Banjo Player/Currently, Adventurer/Sometime Air Privateer; it has recently come to light that he is/was in fact promoted against his will (he had already resigned a week before), to the permanent rank of "Light-Commodore," roughly one step below a full commodore. (basically, a commander of a sqauadron of ships or airships, although his was to have been a desk job after having been shot down).
Weapons of choice: 44 caliber Paterson revolver (Texas Ranger pattern, Modified caliber from standard .36 to heavier .44, and fitted with detachable cylinders (4 in possibles bag, one in the weapon, for ease and speed in reloading during a firefight); large-bore pistol-grip blunderbuss "boat gun";straight-bladed gilt half-basket-hilted dress saber (looks like a bad copy of a military rapier, and the gilt is badly scratched and weathered); "Arkansas Toothpick" type boot knife; Dreyfuss is good with but intensely dislikes volley firearms; is able to use just about any weapon effectively. Adherent of the belief that all things can be weapons.

General Personality: Somewhat aloof, having been raised as an orphan, and having lost friends and individuals who were like family aboard his first command when it was shot down, for which he at least partly blames himself. Tries not to be arrogant or too judgemental, but occasionally fails miserably in both endeavors; can be just as mean and nasty as his former comrades-in-arms if the situation demands it ("well, you know, they're mercenaries; one pay call away from turning pirate, you know. And, their pay comes from being suspicious of everybody. But I try not to be that way anymore").

Has a very long fuse, and a tight rein on his anger, which is a good thing, because he has quite a lot of it, and it tends to cause damage when he lets it get away from him. Cruelty for enjoyment's sake, especially of innocents or defenseless individuals by persons in positions of power, makes his blood boil.

Courageous, loyal to the point of a fault (and beyond). Tries very hard to be scrupulously honest, but will lie to save others' feelings, or to avert catastrophe. Is absolutely (and somewhat humorously) terrified of any sharp object in a physician's hands.

Biography :
(optional)
Jaisen Santiago Dreyfuss, born to a white woman(Marian Parker) and her Natchez adventurer husband (Francois Dreyfuss), was only 1 year old when his parents went to Parker's Fort to visit his mother's relatives, leaving him in the care of a neighboring family. Both parents died in the Comanche attack/incident that made the little fort famous, and Dreyfuss was raised by a blacksmith (one "Diamond Jack" Litton) of the Moses Austin Colony.

Dreyfuss served in the ragtag excuse for an army that half-guarded, half fled headlong along with, the mass of refugees fleeing Santa Anna and his troops during the Runaway Scrape. He started as a fifer, but soon took up a rifle & kit dropped by a comrade who was killed in a skirmish outside Bexar (bay-hahr; pesent-day San Antonio in TRW). He served well enough to earn a commission for gallantry in the face of the enemy, rescuing a young female relative of Interim President Williams from a Mexican cavalry troop ("Brave, my left thumb, I wanted to ask her to the cotillion!"). wounded sixteen times, five from friendly fire when training especially inept volunteers, with whom he seemed to have a talent (so they sent them to him for training. and they kept accidentally - one hopes - shooting him...). After the victory at San Jacinto, he led the contingent of volunteers that chanced upon and captured Generalissimo Antonio de Santa Anna (although they didnt know it until later). After hostilities ended, Dreyfuss jioned up with the mercenary unit that very soon after became a broad-spectrum military-for-hire compnay, complete with a (very primitive) airship arm -- The Bayou Marauders.

After the revolution, and during the time of treaty troubles with both Mexico and French Louisiana, in an attempt to quell or at least lessen the troubles that plagued the tiny country's marine and rivurine borders, The republic of Texas (ROT) contracted the privateer mercenary company the Bayou Marauders (Dreyfuss now a dirigible captain with them), to guard these borders. They prowled the middle-to-eastern coast and bayous, in a motley assortment of craft, including a few primitive underslung-boat-type dirigibles, engaging and sinking or shooting down any who presented a suspicious mien to their (admittedly) over-zealous eye.

Dreyfuss left this organization after his first command (the tiny belted-monitor dirigible Mad Anthony Wayne), was shot down over Galveston Bay, off Indianola, Republic of Texas. Dreyfuss and crew had engaged a Louisiana privateer zeppelin, which cut the cables holding the Mad Anthony 's hull under the gasbag with chain and bar shot, plunging her with all hands into the bay. She never rose again, and Dreyfuss only escaped by accident, having been thrown from the outside after deck (He was trying to secure a loosened cable, the crewman aho had been doing it having been shot down by a rifleman on the Louisianan ship) when the first cables snapped. His torso was lashed by a loose cable that he tried to grab on the way down but lost hold of; the scar is there to this day, from right shoulder blade to left hip.

When he hit the water, Dreyfuss' left leg, hip, ankle, and foot broke, which is the reason for carrying "that stupid, accursed cane." He has learned to use it both defensively and offensively, however. Grudgingly...

When Dreyfuss first arrived in London, It had been a few years on from being shot down. Dreyfuss had managed to acquire a modest side-wheeler steamboat, fit it with a gasbag and much-stronger and less-vulnerable (and much shorter) support lines and cables, along with a rather unconventional (and very powerful) ducted fan propulsion system built from the existing paddle wheel array. The Saint Elmois fast, maneuverable, and reasonably armed –
but she's also in hock in dry-dock props, in a Galveston creditor’s warehouse.

Dreyfuss had since been going around adventuring and odd jobbing (he’d even played banjo in a, ahem, house of negotiable courtship), sending to the creditor in Galveston what little he could from what he makes to ("someday") pay off the debt. He joined the crew of the APF Boheme, to keep his air legs and fight a few of the nasties he’d been hearing about; he is considering staying with the Boheme after the current voyage.

Name : Gregory Einhardt Richter
Age :38
Nationality (place of birth) : Prussia
Physical appearance :aged white-blonde hair, tanned complexion (farmer’s tan); Lean, whiplike physique; cold, piercing ice-blue eyes
Profession / job title: Flag-Captain (Marauder Mercenary Corporation High Command; Reconnaissance Branch)(actual level of Rank is above Captain, but below Light-Commodore)
Biography : (optional)Grew up in Prussia, the son of lesser-noble parents; Father was an Artillery officer under Blucher, before the Napoleonic conflicts. Mother was a minor margrave’s daughter from Hesse-Cassel.

Gregory grew up under the tutelage of the households of the servants and subordinate officers of some of the most influential Prussian military minds of the previous or the Victorian age. His Parents having been killed in a Napoleonic bombardment of the town in which they lived, while young Gregory was a away at military boarding school, Gregory was taken in by his father’s subordinates and raised to be the officer that many of them never were. In his seventeenth year, he joined up with the predominately airship-ascendant mercenary company The Marauders, who were not yet deployed in the New World. (they took the job of border patrol of Louisiana, thus attracting the then-young Jaisen Dreyfuss, about a year later).

Thus, Richter and Dreyfuss were classmates in the Marauder Officer’s Academy; Dreyfuss had already been an infantry lieutenant in teh Rebel Army of the Republic of Texas, amd had Combat experience, thus he was considered the experiential equal of Richter's academically-based rank .  They developed a mutual respect for one another, but never a true friendship, and when the time came to accept individual airship commands, Richter landed a cushy Flag Packet captaincy, whilst Dreyfuss took a comparatively drudge-ridden Monitor border patrol captaincy, The Marauders having just signed to do border patrol duty fro the fledgling Republic of Texas, while surrendering their position in Louisiana.

In point of fact, Dreyfuss’ position was considered the more elite, since the Marauders habitually used their best officers in the field. Richter believed that he should have gotten the Field position, and Dreyfuss the Flag Packet. A fierce rivalry has existed between the two ever since, mainly because Richter kept trying, for several years afterward, to get Dreyfuss fired (courts-martialed) and to supplant him in the Patrol command.

Present: Richter was rather galled at the idea that he was the “dog” sent to “fetch” Dreyfuss for the Marauder High Command position, once the mission of the Boheme was to be completed. He was not told to stand aside in the conflict, but he was warned that the loss in battle of the James Bowie, his first-rater flying Ironclad, would have resulted in his breaking to the lowest possible rank. Luckily for Richter, The Bowie was urgently recalled to Rendezvous One, the place where the Marauders were to meet if they were routed, or fired by their employer, after only a day and a night in the convoy that was raised to escort the Boheme into Shanghai and beyond. The latter is what happened in that case; the Republic of Texas legislature voted to no longer retain the services of the Marauders; much of their in-port seaborne and airborne materiel was seized by the fledgling Texas Navy, and put into use as Texas Navy materiel. Many Marauder field commanders surrendered their vessels in exchange for retention their commands once they were accepted into the new Navy.

Richter was not one of them, however, and with the rest of the Marauders who remained with The Unit, has more or less "turned pirate." He has yet to capture Dreyfuss in any capacity.

Name : Rowland Elmstone
Age : 20
Nationality: London, England
Physical appearance :

Rowland sports a shaggy mop of brown hair. It is usually unkept, since he is much to busy to worry about simple things as his hair. He has a brow that stands out, and slightly shaggy eyebrows. They usually go unnoticed behind his wire framed glasses. He also has slight stubble on his face, and is usually tan from working outdoors. He is fairly tall, but also has a thick build. Overall he is an average youth.

Profession / job title (if any): Currently studying the properties of Aether, and finding random jobs teaching

Biography :

Rowland's story starts out quite well into his teenage years. Up to that point, he had been under the care of his mother, who taught him how to read and write and speak French. He spent many an hour reading novels and books on the art of steam-production. Rowland then moved onto studying at Cambridge where he learned many theories and ideas behind the different Engines currently being used across Europe. He found himself furthering his studies and travelling across the globe. Rowland plans to continue his studies of Aether, and plans to cross the ideas with the locomotive, making an "Aether rail." Rowland believes that it would cut the steam production in half and help travel become cheaper.

Currently, Rowland is stranded in Shanghai, where he hopes to find some help and get back to London.

I would say it is. The game is beginning to wrap up, but we're planning a sort of 'sequel' to it once this is done. Feel free to join in to either one if you so choose.

Yes, you can have more than one character--several of us do, I think. You join by posting your character's profile (guidelines can be found on page 1 of this thread) and jumping right into the RP whenever you feel like it, although you're right, it is rather hectic right now. This RP is in the final stages and will be ending soon, and a "sequel" will be started up shortly after this one is closed, if I remember correctly.

It's a really fun RP, so I do recommend that you join.  Cheesy

Name : Irene Frost
Age : 20
Nationality: American (Virginia)
Physical appearance : Irene would have been a rather pretty girl had it not been for the fact that, more or less, half of her face – the left side – was burnt to the point where restoration would have done nothing. The eye on the left, a pale jade color, was not her original, but a replacement given to her by a good friend, who happened to be rather deceased now. The right eye is an original dark amber color. Her mid-back length charcoal hair is normally put up into a bun with a hair fork (the charms on it may vary). She stands at an average height and trim enough weight with a healthy build and average frame.  From time to time she would wear some sort of veil to cover her face.

Name : Christian Leyton
Age : 27
Nationality (place of birth) : British (Shrewsbury, Shropshire)

Physical appearance : Christian is a well-dressed and intelligent, if slightly distracted-looking, gentleman.  His speech and habit of pointedly ignoring anything he finds distasteful mark him out as well-bred and a snob.  He usually wears smoked glasses on account of his distaste for bright light, a result of his nocturnal habits.  Though he is only 6ft, his slight build makes him seem taller than he is and he maintains this illusion by attempting to keep a clear region around himself.

Profession / job title : In his own words, gentleman-philosopher.  In actual fact, he has certain family investments which his accountant deals with and he does not fully understand.  It involves the rather vulgar (to his mind) transfer of money on an almost weekly basis from one resource or currency to another.  Like most gently-born men, he just doesn't care much as long as it is there when he needs it.

Character : Christian is a gentleman who understands only half of what is going on and pretends that the other half does not exist.  What he does understand is science, which he is currently trying to use to debunk the ridiculous stories he has heard of common people using 'magic'.  His recent experiences have not been altogether encouraging, but rather than accepting the mysticism of the masses, he is convinced that it is simply a new science.  Just as gunpowder must seem 'magic' to those of uncivilised nations, so too is magic just a science that the commoners are using without understanding.
As a result, he has picked up some basic understanding of certain 'vulgar' magics.  As a gentleman, he performs his experiments in darkened rooms out of the way where he will offend of (heavens forbid) upset those of his own class.

Of late, however, he has been tempted to practise those peasant arts simply for convenience.  After all, it would not do for a gentleman to be without a light for his cigars simply because he has misplaced his lucifers...

Biography : Born in Shropshire, Christian knew his parents as distant figures who would sit at the dinner table with his, but take little or no interest in him beyond that.  He was raised by a succession of nurses, tutors and instructors until such time as he could be packed away to a boarding school at the opposite end of the country.
He never learnt the simple trick of obeying the teaching staff, nor trying to fit in with other boys.  As a result, he found his school-life unpleasant and found joy only in tormenting the poorer and younger boys.  He was lucky that he was apt enough at the sciences to earn a protector in the Chemistry Master, who ensured that he was able to claim at least one strong aptitude.

His time in Wadham College at Oxford was spent largely avoiding the faculty and laboratories.  His distaste for academia had not prevented him from entering, but it left him disinclined to participate.  He was lucky to find a group of like-minded fellows and together they set out to make themselves positively disreputable, while staying on the right side of university policy.  They couched their clumsy studies of alchemy in the trappings of respectable chemistry, displayed great piety in the chapel to help pass off their study of 'magic' as a fervent desire to 'know thine enemy' and generally sought to confound their detractors.

As Leyton's peers delved deeper into the mysteries of the metaphysical, he himself drew back as he failed to see any truth beneath the rituals.  He discovered a great need to rationalise the irrational and threw himself into his studies of chemistry and even spent the time to give himself a grounding in basic engineering to balance out the dry nature of pure science.
He graduated as a bachelor of science, avoided gaol long enough to be awarded his Master's degree, and then set out for the primitive parts of Europe to study their vulgar folklore.

And then, one day he returned to England and boarded a train bound for London.  His travelling was over, but he knew at last where to start searching...

(input welcome if I have crossed a line anywhere or he just wouldn't fit)

Profession / job title: none

Biography: Irene was raised as part of the Dreyfuss family the day she was left on their doorstep with nothing but a scrap of paper stating a name which they replaced. The family raised her as their own until her father (Uncle Caractacus' nephew) passed away, revealing the man’s secret failings. Having to sell the house and other possessions they moved in with her uncle. Knowing that they could not rely solely on the uncle and having a need to pay off what was left of the debts, Irene went out to make a small living as a tutor, but quit at the end of the year. After a year of mourning both Irene and her sister found themselves in love with a respectable man, save he was not as respectable as they thought the moment they found out that the man was playing them for fools as he masqueraded as two different men, one for each sister. In a fit of rage during an argument, Irene’s sister flung an oil lamp at her. After the turn of the unfortunate event, the sister in a tumult of emotions hung herself. Unable to deal with the string of misfortunes it is said that the mother died of grief. Reading her mother’s journal, she came to the fact that she was not born into the family and uncovered her true surname of Frost. Unwilling to be a burden to her uncle, she kindly asked to leave. Complying, he gave her a small sum as well as a letter, telling her that if she should ever meet a man with the name Jaisen Santiago Dreyfuss, she ought to hand him this letter. Doubting that she would ever meet the man, she agreed to do so, collected her things, and went on her way.

Misc.: Tends to lie about the tank when one asks her on how she came to obtain such a thing. She responds with: a gift from a smittened prince, stolen from a 'mad-genius', a gift from an Indian/German noble whose life she had daringly rescued from a certain ill fate, she found it abandoned in a forest infested with cannibals and escaped from them with it. Tends to lie about her burn as well.

Well, hopefully soon. The main storyline is coming very close to a conclusion. Normally, I would be open to new characters. However, we have two new characters that I fell should be...well...integrated more into the crew. This game is based around action and characters, so I'd like to give the new players more time to get a feel for their characters. Then we'll wrap this one up and start a new story.

Of course if anyone else thinks what I said makes no sense, please say so.

*slowly raises his hand* Why would you attempt to integrate them more when its about to end? It seems to defeat the purpose... Like it'd be better to start the new one and then they'd join fresh. But whatever works. I'm not gonna say how to do it. I'll wait until I can jump in and not be totally lost.

Well, they have already joined. I don't wish to tell them simply to leave and wait. And the ending will be rather climactic. I want them to get a good feel for character before they enter.

(Once again I must state I am really making this up. Please do not assume I have some sort of official status with this game!)

Well I can understand not wanting to tell them to leave. That'd definately be a jerk thing to do. I just personally don't see why someone would jump in so late in the game. Gives me time to work on my character but I want to see whats happening in the next one so he balances a bit.

Well, that's what the sequel is for. But we have to have an epic conclusion at some point. All that adventuring had better lead to something.

Up until around page 60 we had no clue the aliens existed. It has grown completely organically building to a showdown that should be excellent fun.

Name :Miles Norris Ashcroft
Age :approx. 48
Nationality (place of birth) :New york City, City-state of New York, American Union
Physical appearance :Tall, mostly-grey air, falling to shoulders; muttonchop sideburns and moustache that nearly but do not quite connect; stocky yet thin, a wiry strength and toughness somehow visible about him. almost always dressed in the black & blue uniform of the Republic of Texas Air Fleet (RTAF)(highcollared greatcoat, Navy Blue or black waistcoat, white shirt w/black pinstripes, Black button-bib- front trousers w' buff stripe down outside seam, buckled buckskin & black leather cavalry boots, biack harness-and-saber, peaked cap, Brass Airman's goggles(often worn around base of peaked cap.
Profession / job title (if any): Rear Admiral; C in C of the RTAF International Diplomatic Sortie
Biography : Born in New York City, the City-dtate of New York of the American Union, Miles Ashcroft is the younger of two brothers born to James Tyler Ashcroft and Mary Jane Asgcroft (maiden name: Danforth). The elder son went into the family business, That being textile production. Miles, wanting none of the (as he saw it)boring life of a "wool- thrower," joined teh American Marines at age 18, lying about his age to get in. after 2 years as a marine, he changed his mind and managed to join up with the newly-formed Marauder Air Fleet, and went through their Officer's Academy in record time (he was JS Dreyfuss's classmate when he graduated).

Unlike Dreyfuss, Miles managed to climb the ladder of advancement without major mishap. Whenbthe Mad Anthony Wayne Affair occurred, he was head of investigative activities, and earned the reputation for hard-line adherence to discipline and the rule of law and conduct.

At age 47, he was awarded the rank of Commodore withoin the Marauder High Command, and was instrumental in exposing the Russian infiltration which ultimately led to the Marauders' termination as teh Republic of Texas' security force for it s eastern and Gulf coast borders.

Sfter leaving teh Marauders and joning up with teh republic of Texas, bringing with him, the first-rate underslung ironclad Moses Austin, Miles acquired the command of the RTAF London Relief  Squadron, an effort to aid England in its attempt to throw off teh Yoke of teh Cold Ones; afterward, he managed to secrure for Dreyfuss the liason that he now enjoys, in lieu of being chased all ove rthe globe to return him to active duty as a Texian Commodore. (a fact that Ashcroft, Dreyfuiss, and their mutual old friend Hargood Mondragon, all breathe a sigh of relief at.

(Note: he has a place in the story already, I just wasnt sure if I should add him in or not. I'll erase him if

He seems ok to me, but you might want to move him to the Steam London: Realms of Aether Character Guide. An admirably well-armed fellow.
