Ah, I wondered why nothing came up on your search and then realised you have tagged all the items as steam punk instead of steampunk.

Edinburgh:
Fabhatrix is a wonderful shop selling proper handmade hats. Bowlers in many colours, toppers, tricorns and fashion hats. However serious hats command serious prices. Tricorn (real felt) I got for daughter about 4 years ago cost £60.
http://www.fabhatrix.com/

Glasgow:
There is a recently opened retro clothing shop in Parnie St behind Trongate, very good but I cant remember what its called.

For tools and so on, I would reccommend Machine Mart. Prices are better than B&Q for many things and the range is far better. There is one at 280 Great Western road, near Kelvinbridge. Staff are helpful and not sniffy towards women shoppers as some such places can be. They are of course nationwide so there is every chance of all BGs finding one not too far away.http://www.machinemart.co.uk/

If you are in London, I know there are gazillions of great places, but this shop is local to where my dad lives and they are very nice people there. I reccommend "ECLECTICA", at 803 Wandsworth road (see http://www.allinlondon.co.uk/directory/1221/41440.php  as i dont think they have their own website). Buses 87 and 77 go past the door.

There are always cheapo boxes on the pavement (25p items of bricabrac ) from which i have just got a lovely brass trivet with removal legs, ideal for my teapot in my travelling kit.

Inside is a real cornucopia of every conceivable type of thing, including lots of interest to BGs.

Primark have their autumn stock in now annd its well worth a look.

I picked up a waistcoat in black with thin stripes for £8 (the manufacturer had been over-zealous in sewing up the pickets, but trust me, you can unpick the stitchinf to open them out  Smiley )

They also stock black double-breasted pea coats with epaulettes - the perfect basis for a Victorian-style sailors coat for all you airship pirates. Be warned however, that these are a strange fit - seemingly designed for either tall and skinny people or chimpanzees! If you are a normallly proportioned person with a 42" chest you will have to buy a size XL and shorten the sleeves by an inch or more. However, its stiill a bargain for the price.

Because of the slim cut of the coats they might actually work well for some of you lady airship pirates.

Would it be presumptious of me to suggest my own business for your next update? I make many items for Live Role Play as well as props for film, TV and Theatre. I work with foam, latex, leather, wood, fibreglass, metal and anything that suits me at the time! As a time served Aero engineer I'm also experienced in Hydraulics and Pneumatics and many other mechanical processes and love taking on custom challenges. Based in Lesmahagow (20 miles South of Glasgow) you'll find me online at www.skianmhor.co.uk

Good afternoon ladies and gents!

I can recommend one particular shop on the Cowley Road in Oxford that sells a variety of vintage clothing at excellent prices. Called Reign, it caters for men and women and sells a variety of shoes, hats, waistcoats, leather jackets, dresses, eveningwear, shirts, ties, belts...you name it! I picked up a gorgeous waistcoat from there for £14 and the girl is very friendly.

This is a great store!
They have finally released their Steampunk range for order.
What really makes this a store that stands apart from the rest is that they are willing to make up a design for you... Just made the most craziest design through them - and they are going for it! Will see how they turn out.
They are handmade in London and have this fabric which is apparently exclusive 'Steamforce Flying' textured leather.
Saw a prototype of the Aristocrat boot during this last Whitby and have been eagerly awaiting the store's opening.

I know the owner of Steam/Penangalan as I go to his club night in Oxford, and luckily he kept me up to date with this. If anyone has any ideas for any boot combinations (as he makes/customises) them all then please send him an e-mail with your suggestions.

I'm hoping to get a pair of the Steam Raiders Smiley

Hehe, I see I'm not the only one on the Penangalan mailing list Cheesy Was just about to bring that up. They look awesome... I'd love to see how the custom ones come out... I'd really like a shorter pair of the ones with all the straps, and that might be an option.
I'll update the list tomorrow or Friday, got no time now.

Updated Smiley It takes longer every time... don't know how Proteus copes with managing the whole damn site Cheesy

I'll give that shop in Oxford a look when I'm (with luck) there in a week or so for an interview. Does anyone fancy the idea of some sort of steampunk secret shopper - visiting these shops to check them out and see how good they really are? Reviews might be fun.

Yours,

Ben

My friend found some vaguely steampunk stuff in blue banana in Bristol (after trying on a pair of pink tigerstripe flares and a girl's blouse. He's a little odd). It's a chain isn't it?

Yeah, Blue Banana is a chain, its been going for a good few years. It used to be FAR more gothy than it is now, they used to sell Alchemy Gothic, and several clothing brands that would appeal to us. They went through a dry spell in recent years where all they seemed to sell was neon cyber wear, tacky brand names and drug paraphenalia but now the goth is creeping back in, I bought some fascinators for a mere £5 each the other day!

I found an advert for a store in Cardiff called Big Girl's Blouse, which apparently specialises in pin up and burlesque style clothing, icluding vintage items. Might be worth a look:

Oh, and we also have an All Saints branch in Cardiff now, on The Hayes in the new St David's 2 shopping mall. I bought my beloved buckle strap hitch dress in there for £33 in the sale (reduced from £110), and they have some of the nicest boots and gloves I have ever seen. Very post apocalyptic style they have at the moment, plus they are currently selling tee shirts with designs on by Laurie Lipton, an excellant steampunk artist. They are a little bit more expensive and would only be suitable for those without a budget (tee shirts average £45, boots over £100, jewelry averages £50 etc), but I adore them, and the sales are worth it. The changing rooms in the Cardiff one are painted to look like filthy industrial toilets/shower stalls!
