What I wonder is the number of the "Steampunk sharks," who live off the Hollywood machine, that will be featured in the show?  I do see some interesting creations, but the show will become awfully destructive to the movement by bending toward the typical reality TV show formula of conflict and drama.  It revolts me to think I going to watch a Steampunk equivalent of Chef Ramsey or such.

So it's like, the great egg race mixed with changing rooms and a touch of x-factor thrown in just to curdle the whole lot.

Quote: "You throw a pile of crap on the ground I'm coming out with something bad ass."

It was never "crap" to begin with mate. It's good stuff that just needed a touch of re-ordering. An artist or designer should never underestimate their raw materials.
Work with them certainly, but know and respect what your fighting.

Also I find the contestants, I've seen to be a tad abrasive. Don't they know it's not the winning that is important but the taking part? Honestly, cheapening the endeavour with cash rewards, quite the poor showing and to my mind counter productive. Hmmm they have some interesting people judging this. Thomas Willeford, Matt King, Kate "Kato" Lambert. Well, if your looking for press (I.E. if this is your career) all options should remain firmly open.....

I dislike gladiatorial making challenges at the best of times it somehow feels unbecoming. Like building a better bomb, even if you win, you loose.

If you make everything a competition then people fearing competition will not share their knowledge and the skills die out. Wasn't that one of the core things we were fighting against in the first place? Just a thought.

Hmm I see LadyClankington around these parts (occasionally) she is on good terms with Master Willeford, after the dust has settled. I would like to see his take on this (from the inside out so to speak). I know his hands will be tied (never bad mouth any job, good or bad) but he's a smart man and I trust his judgement. I'm quite sure his version of events will speak volumes.

Just saw the preview and thought it was a maker's fair, until I saw it was on GSN. I am against the idea of making it a game show, but it could open (or in a twist, close) the genre to many who may not have been exposed before.

I'm quite sure there is a perfectly valid reason behind it. One which is completely eluding me currently.

First episode aired and the knives are out already. Although I didn't see it, apparently it is following the tried and tested formula of 10% substance and 90% dramar (not a typo I'm using the Essex pronunciation). I was scratching my head trying to think of a reality tv show that actually offers a serious and in depth look at it's subject matter. I was assured there has been one but evidently this isn't it. Oh well, the worst that can happen is the show gets cancelled, Hollywood declares Steampunk dead again because it still can't seem to monetise it properly and we all carry on as normal. Move along folks nothing to see here.

I don't care for drama, but I would really like to know what they are making, how they are making it and what materials are being used.

Also how is it being judged as to who is making the best steampunk.

They get to scavenge from the "Punkyard", a junk yard of misused items, and even some vintage and antique items, left outside. They get a workshop of power tools, and a drafting table for blueprints. They also have to create costumes, but must use whatever fabric the show provides. They kicked off a costumer designer because he failed at being a mechanic, and left the person who openly insulted the judges on the show to cause drama. The outfits and things they did were amazing, but it focused less on the making really and more on the drama and personal interactions then anything else really.

Much better overall than the first episode. The outfits and ideas were amazing, superb even. But again, the sow focused more on the drama and "special button" than any actual building.

Very good to hear that the work is good.  I was most worried that it would be a glue a gear on show, but if they have actual makers, that is great.  Thanks!  Please keep us updated.

What in particular was made this week?
