Looks like a guitar amp or maybe a subwoofer to me.

Darn fine work Mr Grub (was tempted on the heavy metal music comment, but resisted  Tongue)

Is this going to be portable? the original part looks very much like a handle.

Yes, looks like to me as well. Smiley
And you are right it is quite heavy.

My Stereo, after the membrane split on Wharfedale speaker I needed another.
I don't know much about audio.
It is a Digital design speaker.

As it's only mid I think I might make box underneath for subwoofer

Ah, DigitalDesigns, good stuff. Used a pair or 2 in my car audio days. Just remember they are 4ohm and not 6 or 8 as typical home audio speakers.  Wink
Repair kits are available for typical issues, but those take time and more techniques.
.....hmmmm, so you're making 2 of these....

SVNVS, Definitely NOT a sub = 2 drivers (a coax). Just saying....

There is controversy on this seems

If you listen at moderate to lower volumes= no, all should be fine. Although, continuous use will lead to a faster death.
So if you listen for a couple of hours at a time (say 4+) or at higher volumes= yes.
The amps will run hotter faster and, of course, that heat will cause components to wear quicker. Now, if you attach a small computer fan or 2 (1 to push, 1 to pull- 1 on top, 1 on the bottom or front to back, side to side) these could negate those effects depending on your use and how well the fans work.
So for 'background' listening it should be ok.
As an addition: some home audio amps are well suited for 6ohm loads and a occasional few can do 4ohm if split between 'A' & 'B'(if those units have A/B).
In short for practicle thought, halfing the ohmage doubles the power out from the amp, double power=double strain on items not meant to do that.

Obviously, your old Wharfedales (which are great!) were made for home use.
I have a pair of mid-line DALI and they are 6ohm and my crappy Yamaha receiver does just fine.

Thanks for the info.
I have doubts now may look for a more suitable speaker.

Frame sandwiched, buried threaded post so can't see from front.

Fits in there.

Screwed from back.

Now it comes together! It's interesting to find out just how big, or small a part actually is, compared to what it seems to be in it's own photo.

That should make a great sound with all that solid work.

Thanks and carry on!
