The local group (North-West Ohio)seems to have vanished into the aether a few years ago. However, there's been some recent talk amongst a few people about getting something going again, no matter how informal it may be. We set up a basic meet, greet, and drink caffeine for next week, and one of the things I thought about bringing up was a name change, since I can't find anything, outside of steampunk empire, regarding the old group. So, I'm asking everyone here for opinions on a name change.

The old name is "The Great Black Swamp Society of Steam and Lace" I don't know what it is, but something about it seems like there would be a better name out there. Airship "whatever" is very played out, nothing against those who belong to one of those, but I like variety.

I like the Black Swamp tie in, because that is a big part of this areas history. A few other things of note for the area:

Oil
  • Heart of the Ohio Oil Rush in late 1800's
  • One of the towns is a "Historic RailRoad and Oil Town"
  • Marathon Oil's world headquarters is located here

Railroads Surprisingly having difficulty finding details on this.
  • B&O used run through the area, considered the direct route between Pittsburgh, PA and Detroit, MI
  • Most things I'm finding online tie in to the oil rush, will have to do some research in person

Black Swamp Explorer's Society

It keeps some key references to the old name, and sounds like you have more of a goal then you may actually have.

The "lace " thing is a little off putting.  You don't look the lace type of guy - but then one can never tell.

Not into wearing lace, that I know of, but the one guy wears a kilt. Gang would be perfect as we know it, but general public might get the wrong impression. I've been writing down all the ideas, thanks everyone.

Black Swamp Exploration Society is fine and all, but Victorians ,ight choose a slightly more grandiose, more industrial name.

If I understand correctly, the Ohio region is part of the historial Appalachian Basin.  Now that has a better ring to it.

And something is missing...  What is there to refer to Steampunk proper?  Exploration Society, doesn't necessarily point to Steampunk.

How about this?

I see your point about steampunk proper missing. Yes, parts of Ohio are Appalachian basin
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This is the area of Ohio I'm in. Unfortunately out of the Appalachian basin, it's nothing but flat farm land.

Reading through the 'what is steampunk' thread, people are coming up with different terms for a group, without saying punkers. Some of those may work..
Black Swamp Steam Assemblage
Black Swamp Meshing of Steam (Explorers) (don't want it too long)

Edit: Spoilered the pics

I based  the name of one of my  facebook pages on making an acronym.  The  1st letters  spell out a slogan. ANZSPAC - tion; a play on inspection and ANZAC.

The pages is Antipodes N.Z. SteamPunk Army Corps, which is a bit of a mouthful   and doesn't  have  the flow .

But if you   gangstas are clever , you may come up with something quite witty.

It just occurred  that Black Swamp   alone is not so good and needs the other words around it.  Lips sealed

Back when there was a black swamp disc golf association, bsdga didn't roll off the tongue, so everyone called us b.s.ers. Which was actually quite accurate.

So BSA is out. It works well for the  motorcycle  company , but it might not go down well   in your town.

Our own Texas Steampunks group (not to be confused with the newer Texas Steampunk) used to be called Seaholm Steam and Diesel, in deference to Dieselpunk aficionados and to the old 1950s Seaholm power plant in south-central Austin.

The name had a "utility/energy provider" ring to it (like maybe we should be sending invoices in the mail to see who might send us a cheque?  Roll Eyes Grin ) You can always charge membership fees by the Kilowatt-Hour  Grin

Perhaps too obvious but Black Swamp Steam and Oil?  An oil barrel or an oil pump with a cog as a symbol?

That's a good idea,  the income from the amount of energy wasted on that one guy who asks half-assed questions to make others do work for him will pay for some re really nice shindigs
