For me, the idea of getting points for participating by contributing to conversations is far more important than just be logged on.

Trouble is people would also get points for posts that don't contribute to the conversation, so there used to be a lot of post-whoring. Time-based ranks were intended to reward people for learning about our culture before posting something inappropriate, and for following the adage, "You have two ears and one mouth. Try to use them in proportion."
I agree.
(People would simply post "I agree" and get points.)  Wink

Okay, so after about a month of being a Z.Overlord by number of posts, now I'm back to Admiral by time served.
So, I deduce that indicates my posts-per-hour rate is on the positive side of the balance.

Should I just shut up then and lurk more?    Smiley

Great way to look at it. It would be interesting to know how many went up in rank and how many went down.  I would guess that more went down than up.

I was Immortal and now I am a Zeppelin Overlord.
I'm not really bothered as Zeppelin Overlord sounds cooler anyway.  Wink

I recall this change happening several times, and I find it interesting to note that as far as I can recall my rank has never changed as a result of it.

I recall the same thing happening on occasions when the forum software was updated, and although I remember my rank changing once or twice it's only ever been by one rank (up or down).

Yup - that is currently the highest rank, which requires 10,000 hours online. And the one to attain it is DreamHazard with 10,214 hours.

As DreamHazard has confessed in a thread somewhere, he has written a program that constantly refreshes brassgoggles.

So we need to create a new rank just for him: "Outlier."

Like I say, I think that's being kept a secret, to discover as you go up the ranks.  Tongue

I'd say we need a rank above Steam Aficionado now that has been achieved (I like the idea of giving the autorefresher guy some custom title too)

Ok, there appears to be a bit of a flap about this, people don't like the demotions it seems.

I got promoted as it turns out, but I'm not bothered either way.

Could we revert back to post count and keep the status quo happy?

I'm afraid I have a feeling that people will have to like it or lump it. Although the default software used here ranks people based on post count, the mod to rank people based on time online was (from what I understand) introduced as a defense mechanism against spammers (since Swabs can't send/view PM's) so as to prevent spammers posting a few random topics to get their rank up and then bombarding members with vexatious messages. It also encourages people to hang around and think about what they're adding to discussions rather than creating a load of topics/making a large number of largely meaningless posts for the sake of kudos that comes through a higher rank.

The downside is of course it can encourage lurking, but I'd rather be a member of a forum where people lurk and occasionally interject than somewhere where tons of people post but little actual discussion takes place (it's one of the main reasons I prefer here to the British Steampunk Community Farcebook page).

Of course if everyone lurked and no one post, the site would be of little value in short order.
