With the expert of advice of the Kepi Meister D Oakes I've made my second kepi, for Maryland and McLellan's Zouaves.

(I feel i should point out it's red, not pink)

 Smiley

I'll have to get some more pics, I've now got this, blue striped infantry, yellow striped cavalry, and am busy working on a gold braided officer's.

I've also made black, grey, brown and butternut slouches and I've got my fez (which i didn't make). I just need a straw hat and I think I'll have all my ACW bases covered.

What about the "Garabaldi" cap & the Zouave turban?

having said that, I don't like to not have a hat. I bought this one the other day because I didn't already have one:

Dammit I've just found a picture of a Louisiana Zouave wearing a turban. Looks like I will need one now.

On the plus side I've finished my straw hat. This was originally one of those sort of stetson shaped straw hats with a grooved crown, indented sides and brim curled up at both sides. Or, as Zoe calls them, "what the ladies at croquet wear"

I cheat and throw a stitch into the front of my kepi and forage caps, to hold the crown forward at a rakish angle.

as small as my noggin is, it still manages to make a forage cap stand straight up like a beer cup. not stylish in the least.

FYI, if you decide to soak a bandana in water and tuck it under the cap ( AC on a hot day) make sure it's an old one, with all the extra dye laundered out. otherwise you get a sort of tie dye tattoo on the head, along with a pink collar on your shirt.

I like the gold stripes on the last cap, very interesting look!

That was a bit of a compromise: the actual knot would have been impossible with the braid I used. I think this looks ok though.

oooh very nice.

if the shipping wasn't so obscene, I would mail you a couple of crossed cannons and sabres for the tops. I even have a harp pin from one of my old hats.

the cap is a bit odd in that there is a dark green edging on the crown, like your yellow piping, half of the so called experts tell me its a medical cap for field orderlies, and the other half say it's for an Irish brigade. all I know is it's a well made forage cap and it fits me well, green piping be damned.

a lot of the other re-enactors break the retaining wires on the cap hardware trying to push them through the crowns, most of  the caps have either a leather stiffener or a plastic or cardboard one (the cheap caps) I always use an awl to start some holes first. I don't tell anyone else though, they give me all their broken ones and I just solder in a new wire and ferret them away in my kit.  Wink
