I found this resource yesterday - a tool for writers of history and alternate history. It is the Ngram viewer from Google. If you have ever wondered about whether a certain word would have been used in Victorian times, this what you need to find out.

For example, how often was the word 'firebox' used in books over the last couple of hundred years:

It really is great tool and excellent fun to mess around with. Now all our anachronisms will be intentional!
