I find the lack of tropical storm activity in the region between South America and West Africa to be very appealing Smiley

We could take over Pitcairn Island once they´ve thrown half the population in jail.

What does that mean?  I'm not familiar with Pitcairn Island. . .

Bad things happened there. About half the population risks jail time for it. Out of about 48 people.

Are you talking about the rape case?   And, I'm not being rude, but there has to be some major incest going on there. . .

Yeah, all that stuff. But I guess it is still owned by the British who might put up a fight.

I have an idea of where to place these floating islands/underwater bases (if they are the method of territory aquisition in favour at the moment)

The middle of the Atlantic Ocean

  • Mid atlanic trench nearby- for daring exploration by we gentlemen and ladies (and tinkerers and pirates and scoundrels)
  • We can finaly bring some credibility to the Bermuda Triangle myth- of ships and aeroplanes "disappearing"
  • Brilliant trade links with the western world

Also, to get to said underwater bases, (possibly impossible), has anyone read "A Transatlantic Tunnel" by Harry Harrisson (A very Steampunky book).

Either that, or the boffins among us come up with a way of colonising the moon En Masse and we create biodomes in the meteor craters.

I shall do some planning and thinking upon this..... *manically chuckles*

Why dont we pop over to the Philippines and that part of the world with a few tug-boats and tow a bunch of the tiny uninhabited islands together and make one huge island.

While a tempting idea... one forgets how it is, exactly, that islands are formed, and stay above water. Wink

I thought everyone knew that islands are typically formed during disputes over the extent of territorial waters, usually regarding fishing rights and similar issues?  The process consists of offering sacrifices to the Norse fire god Surtr, and then he creates an island for you.  The details regarding the nature of the sacrifice needed are kept a closely guarded secret, but you would think that Surtr might look favourably upon a SteamPunk civilization.

Next, we need plutonium and tritium.  And a timer.  I have an alarm clock I'd be happy to donate. Smiley

ok, to help this thread out a bit... i'd suggest a semi submercible craft... (using balasts) but otherwise the ship being neutrally boyant.

use pycrete for the construction of it (easy to make, cheap, strong, and easy to add onto existing construction)

as far as the motors go for moving the island arround and what not. i have that covered, dont worry about it. we dont need to worry about electricity for movement or for useage on the island.

food wise we can grow most of the food onboard (not like we are too worried about space) but it can be all done with hydroponics, and or taking soil from various land areas to keep things growing.

our best bet is to build this thing basicly like a giant cruise ship/aircraft carier. (landing deck on top but still allow it to be sealed off incase of an emergency)

read the book Pendragon (Book #2) for some ideas on size i have in mind for it.

otherwise i'd say thats about everything... only thing that really costs money you'd need to worry about is things like piping and basic units/parts for cooling the structure... otherwise thats not too bad... sawdust is pretty cheap almost anywhere you go (get it as scrap for starting off and then eventually build on from there with things like bamboo pulp (grows much faster)

How would you get the power for moving then? Also what would you suggest for trading with other countries?

I've got a motor that runs on magnets Cheesy

and as far as trading with other countries... if we build the boat big enough... we dont need to. we should be able to simply just use tourism as an income fund... but if we REALLY want to trade... we COULD grow an over abundance of food and sell it to different markets arround the world.

if we have a big enough ship, having a minimum of 200+ inhabitents wouldn't be a problem. not to mention full farm animal compliance (cows, chickens, ect.) and since we can make the inside of the ship how ever we want, we can technically grow what ever we want in there too (change the climate per room)

On magnets? Don´t think that will work.

We may be able to grow lots of crops, but that might rely on using pesticide and modern farming methods. Not so steampunk. Besides we need to grow trees as fuel for all our steam engines. We also need the crops grown at competitive prices.

it already does work (using it to power my house actually) and working on a version for a bike and car now.

as far as growing crops, we dont need to worry too much about pesticides because we will be at sea for the most part seperated from everything else. Trees are fine to grow there since we'll need them for things like expanding and what not.

selling crops at compeditive prices isn't hard... what we dont end up using we sell... we can sell them at market price just match the market.
