Hello all,

After much work getting in the way, I can finally announce that we will be compiling and publishing a fifth volume in the Asylum Chronicles.

The rules are the same as ever, pm me a plot synopsis and get your story written for the first editing deadline, which will be March the thirtieth.

As ever, I am looking for original short stories with a guide length of between 4500 - 9000 words, although I am flexible.

As with the previous volumes, there will be an over arching story to bind the volume together, but each short story is intended to stand alone.

The story Arch:

August 1914.
Europe has slid into the war that every nation had feared and expected.
King George, recoiling from the crisis that the "progress" has brought to his country, has begun exercising sweeping new powers in an attempt to restore "Merry England"
The Captains of the Royal Household, known as "The King's Men", are ruthlessly engaged in destroying anything that threatens the "old order". Inventors, scientists and philosophers are imprisoned, factories and workshops are closed or burned down. History is to be re-written in the official image of the perfect Victorian family and perfect Victorian values.
In a small house on Union Road, Lincoln, in the shadow of the old Asylum, lives Miss Emmaline Raine (spinster). She watches the world go by, she watches sadly as the horrors of the past are unleashed again. She also knows that she is a part of the history that The King's Men would like rewritten.
The maid has gone to the railway station to say farewell to the young men going to war.
The housekeeper, has taken the day off.
The King's Men are knocking on the door...

The short stories will emerge from The King's Men interviewing Miss Raine in her home.

Key Points:
The stories can be related in whatever way the writers wish, but PLEASE do not use Miss Raine or The King's Men as narrators. The reason for this is that by keeping them separate we free all the writers (including me) to create moods and characters of their own. PLEASE keep this in mind.

The stories should, unless for very clear and specific reasons, be set before August the 15th 1914. That allows plenty of scope, but does ot allow things like the Somme for example.

The following titles and themes are to prompt people, but are not cast in stone.

The Trial - The death of a public official is examined in court.
Drums along the border - a group of fanatics plot to start a war between two neighbouring countries.
The struggle within - a stranger in London struggles to fit in while fighting and strange internal/spiritual battle.
A stranger in need - a young man puts himself in peril when he aids an enemy of the government.
Without a trace - an entire village is wiped off the map.
Power corrupts - an industrialist uses his manufacturing base to gain personal power.
The lost war - the survivor of a conflict returns to find no one knows who he was or what he fought for.
All the Duke's men - an aristocrat plots to seize the throne of England.
Night creatures - in a rural village strange stories abound about the night creatures, but are they phantoms, or the cover story for more worldly evils.

So, have a look. Get in touch and lets have some fun with this.

Well I have a short story that I could utilise for The Lost War, but I could theoretically create something new for it. Synopsis to follow in PM.

You know, I'm starting to get paranoid and thinking I keep killing threads off just by posting.

Surely someone else out there can come up with something?

'All the Duke's Men' offers some interesting possibilities. I would like to have a go at it, if that is acceptable.

Hello there.

I have had interest from a number of people either on BG or the BSC.

Current state of play is that I have interest in;

All the Duke's Men
Without a trace
The Lost War
Night Creatures

and

The Struggle Within.

Just to clarify a point - the book is set in 1914, but it is a series of stories that emerge out of a heated interview. These are stories that are both disclosed and suppressed (by both parties) and can have taken place at any time up to 1914. Don't feel the story arc limits what you should write, be creative and some how I will fit it all together.

Cheers,

A.

I wasn't going to throw my hat into the ring for this... I really wasn't. Personal life has been very busy and complex of late for reasons i won't go into here....but....

A few nights ago i had detailed (and very cinematic) dream about an enigmatic industrialist, a vast military contract and a private detective....

so if it's still up for grabs then I'd very much like to take a crack at "Power Corrupts"

As soon as you've had a synopsis approved, the only deadline for submission is 30th March.

Were there any specifics about level of adult content?

Not that I'm writing erotica.... (I have a pseudonym for that) but the first scene in my story may be unsuitable for those under the age of 15 in cinema parlance.

Neon - good question. Given that we have had a first hand account of someone being tortured to death and various forms of murder, I think we have a bit of leeway. It depends very much on the context.

Write it and we will discuss if further - remember I consider editing a two way process!

Fair enough...  will get writing!

I have another that's finished but needs some expanding that 'might' work with a few tweaks here and there... but I'll PM you about that ...

Jings!  Only just noticed this.  Mr Arkwright sir, I'd be happy to have a go at The Trial.  There will be no refernces to Mr Kafka in the narrative.  I'll ether-ping you a synopsis during the Yuletide festivities.  Merry Xmas to one and all!

Just a question, is "A stranger in need" taken, or "drums on the border"?
