I always wanted a Colt Navy 1851 but couldn't justify £90 to buy one.

Having plenty of acrylic and wood, I started work on my own custom model.

I'm not sure if I will fit the chamber yet but that's the trigger going on.

The first few bits placed together.
Still lots of sanding, shaping and polishing, but its a start

Ninety quid!! Blimey! I have a rather nice 1851 Colt I was waving about with abandon at Asylum this year..

Cost me £20... It came with a really nice display stand too..the only difference is my one is my one has been converted into a table cigarette lighter

When I told my Dad about the project he remarked that he always considered the 1851 Navy as the most elegant percussion revolver.  When his father acquired a London made one in the 30s, it was still loaded.  He took the pistol to the range and unloaded it the quick way.  Every chamber fired.

Oh....bummer!

And there in lies the problem.
Anyway, found a doorstep supplier for free acrylic sheet and been out to pick up an 11mm drill bit.
Apparently acrylic sellers cant measure, 10mm acrylic rod = 11.********** some odd mm.

Dam it all to hell, I broke the barrel, Well it is going to be Sp'd so I can cover it all up. It was a clean brake and while it wont be as strong, it will glue securely.

Suggestion:  If you didn't break the barrel "too" short, figure out a way to make the barrel detachable.  Then make this a "snubnose" barrel & make a second, full length barrel.  Then, by simply switching barrels, you can use it for several different impressions.

It looks like you already know what you're doing, but the trick I was taught for plastics was to use dull drills and saws.

Embarrassedit is best to drill a small hole and gradually work your way toa larger size.

the part that snapped was not the actual barrel but the bit where the barrel sides over the chamber support

Not necessarily true. The reason it snapped was because I twisted the drill while I was drilling!

When cutting I have found a sharp wood laminate blade a wonderful blade. The outer edges are flat but the inner edges are beveled into the middle of the blades thickness. It has two alternating rows of very sharp teeth that leave a clean crisp cut but you must let it bite on its own and not push!
Second best is a diamond blade (always buy a good one.) followed but a high tpi acrylic blade!

As to drilling, in my case the following is a godsend of a drill bit.
the old problem is the tip doesn't leave a square hole.
If you have the proper tools (or can keep everything square) the wood spade bits work perfectly.

There is also a range of drill bits specifically for plastics/acrylics, but may be too pricey as a set.
I like Will Howards suggestion.

I will certainly join the camp of (don't buy cheep tools) I have a 50mm diamond blade i got cheep and its well ...

Its all back together and will try to get a pic up soon of how it all joins together. (Sorry Howard, didn't register you comment about swapable barrells!
The barrel will be held on like the oridginal was.

Just found two sheets of brass so I can use that to cover the join.
Need to wait abit before I start on the decoration (Need to find odd bits first and work out how to make some parts!)
The bug has bitten me and I want to move onto a rifle.

With a cross wedge? then by careful fitting you CAN fit two different barrels, should you wish.

Yup the sprung wedge, but drilling through the body and rod is making me nervious (especially as I cut the rod a bit short!)

It seems almost a shame to make a gun from transparent material then spray paint it. It would be cool to cast a perfectly detailed gun replica from transparent resin. The kind of thing a gun-shop might have as a display piece.

It was intended to be fully transparent but ended up as as practice.
I have loads of acrylic (well no 40mm rod) to work on more.
